The value-store chain Family Dollar said on Saturday that it had temporarily closed more than 400 stores after the discovery of a rodent infestation and other unsanitary conditions at a distribution center in Arkansas touched off a far-reaching recall of food, dietary supplements, cosmetics and other products.

A recent Food and Drug Administration inspection of the facility, in West Memphis, Ark., found live and dead rodents “in various states of decay,” rodent droppings, evidence of gnawing and nesting, and products stored in conditions that did not protect against these unsanitary conditions, the agency said in a statement on Friday.

A fumigation of the facility last month revealed more than 1,100 dead rodents, and a review of company records indicated the collection of more than 2,300 rodents from late March to September, “demonstrating a history of infestation,” the agency said. Rodent contamination can cause salmonella and infectious diseases, the F.D.A. said.

This will negatively effect every Family Dollar in America. Shoppers remember horrors like this. I don't live near any of the effected Family Dollars, but I'll never step foot in another one regardless of where it's located.

This worried me about Dollar Tree who owns Family Dollar. I go there every so often. But really it makes me worry about all food stored in warehouses anywhere. Shudder to think about it

But lots of people will still go there. Those who do not read news and those who don't have a choice, because the Family Dollar or any other dollar store is the only one available in their area, especially in rural areas.
This type of stores are expanding rapidly lately.
It may seem like there's already one everywhere you look. Their business is booming. Nearly 1 in 3 new stores opening in the US is a Dollar General. Communities feel choked by them.
Dollar General opened 1,000 new stores last year and has 1,050 more in the works for 2021. Dollar Tree, which owns Family Dollar, added roughly 500 new dollar stores in 2020 and plans on opening 600 more this year.
The CEO is making $1.3M a year.

The sad truth:

And this is the reason why we don’t want to get rid of the FDA.

Family Dollar seems to have had a history with rat infestations at other sites.

I wonder if unsold Dollar Tree / Family Dollar merchandise ever finds its way to online sellers like Amazon or eBay?

I'll keep going just to buy non- perishables. I've got my mask and hand sanitizer.

I saw a video of how quickly rats can get on boats/ships if the rat shields aren't put on as soon as the the ship docks. It was crazy!
