I thought 'petting the camel' meant something completely different...
Quote:
A camel escaped from a petting zoo and killed two people in Tennessee Thursday, authorities said.
Deputies received a call of a camel attacking people near Shirley Farms in Obion, the Obion County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. They arrived and found two unconscious people and the camel still on the loose. The men, Bobby Matheny, 42, and Tommy Gunn, 67, were pronounced dead at the scene.
It's not clear whether they worked at the petting zoo or what type of camel was involved in the attack.
That story is just sad all around. What kind of training did those two men have? Why didn't they back off when the camels showed hostile distrust and follow proper procedure. Why wasn't a tranquilizer gun used to sedate the camels before the cops got there? The cops don't have a clue on how to handle that type of incident. I hope the owners are held responsible and that the rest of their camels are re homed.
. I read this story several days ago on my news feed on Apple News. The petting zoo is on a small part of a large working farm. I thought the 2 people killed were working on another part of the farm not near the petting zoo. It escaped and ran to the other part of the farm where the guys were working. They didn’t work with the animals or the petting zoo. The farm used to have camel rides but stopped in 2017.
Another article cited an expert who said it might have been because this is mating season.
Camels are vile tempered and they are big, heavy, and strong. They are not really cute cuddly pets. I hope that their role in a petting zoo was to be looked at and not to be petted. They are not nice animals.
Not much information in that article. How did they escape?
I don't think the cops had much choice but to shoot them (assuming that's what "euthanized" means). They don't carry tranquilizing darts. And I doubt the police academy trains them how to wrestle camels safely to the ground.
Aren't they always lambs and goats? And the occasional piglet?
Probably giving camel rides.
I rode on a camel at the regular zoo, once, when I was little.
