The video was finally released. I can't imagine how scary that was for those poor kids.
Quote:
A video, released by the Albuquerque Police Department, shows the moment of impact when a speeding Ford Mustang hit a school bus full of middle school students. Kids climbed out of windows and the emergency door to safety, while adult bystanders who witnessed the crash came to assist the frightened children. According to Albuquerque Public Schools, there were 23 students heading home at the time of the crash. The bus driver and seven students were sent to the hospital for their injuries.
Following the rollover crash, police charged Mario Perez, 49, with two counts of great bodily harm by vehicle, which is a third-degree felony, according to a press release from APD.
Perez was allegedly driving a white Mustang at more than 100 miles per hour in a race against a blue Mustang that fled the scene of the accident, according to a witness who spoke to the police.

I wish the police could have pulled a sheet over Mario Perez's dead body and hauled him away in a hearse. Someone with that little regard for the safety of others doesn't deserve to be alive.
I actually jumped out of my seat a bit when I watched the impact...holy. It annoys me so much how many idiots out there have licenses....driving is a privilege, not a right. So many take it for granted

Yep. These were not two 17-year-old kids drag-racing (which would have been bad enough!), but Perez was a 49-year-old man!
Good god! I'm still in my 30s and that gave me the chills just thinking about this. A 49 year old? Lock him up!
He’s only charged with a third degree felony, he might not get any jail time for that unless he has a record. Even the kid who killed the young woman speeding in a Lamborghini only got 7-9 months. His larger punishment will come in the form of lawsuits, most likely.
And Perez was released from jail after promising not to drive!
"The judge warned if Perez does drive, he'll be back in jail. The judge also ordered Perez not to leave the state and have no contact with any of the crash victims.
Perez is charged with two counts of great bodily injury by vehicle, with reckless driving. Two students were seriously hurt in the crash."

It would be highly unusual for someone to be held in jail pending trial even for a severe traffic infraction, regardless how irresponsible, stupid and dangerous it was.
Boy if there was ever a message that traveling in a school bus is safe this would be it. Any other vehicle and those passengers could have been killed. As scary as that was, and I still don't understand why kids aren't required to wear seat belts (enforcement would be a challenge but even with half compliance it would be safer), I believe there were no serious injuries to the kids right?
