Wow... After reading the exchange, it brought back flashbacks to something very similar that happened to me maybe 15 years ago or so.
They lure you in as some sort of online "date," and they are very good at engaging with their victims. Seductive, video chats, etc.

Yikes.

RIP kid.

Yes, but he wasn't sending nude photos of himself to the internet. He was sending them to Dani Robertts, an undoubtedly hot girl who was totally into him. At least, so he thought. Trouble was, he wasn't thinking with his head; he was thinking with the body part that he sent the photos of.

I feel awful for the friends and family of Jordan DeMay, but maybe some good can come of this tragedy if it will help more people come to realize that bad things can happen if you send nude photos of yourself to someone you've never met.

Yes, to all teenagers reading this...don't send out any nudes to anyone. It's illegal anyways. If the person you send the nudes out to accidentally shows them to someone else, they could be sent to jail. If you really care about them, think of how awful you would feel if they are sent to jail because someone found them.

Do the caring and loving thing and refuse to send out any nudes, no matter how much they pressure you. You will thank yourself forever.

^^^ a sound advice.

BUT,
if you made a mistake and did that anyway - it isn’t the end of the world and you don’t have to end your life over it.

Learn a lesson - don’t trust people on internet especially if haven’t met them in real life - and move on.

Parents, other relatives should drive it home to our teens!

How would they even find them?? There are plenty of kids right here that have killed themselves from bullying at the hands of other American kids (and adults) but no one is calling for Marines?

They are trying to enact legislation against sexploitation.

[A] 17-year-old fatally shot himself. His father, Brandon Guffey, says he was at their home in Rock Hill, South Carolina, when he heard a loud thud. It sounded like someone had slammed a bowling ball to the floor.

He rushed to the bathroom and found his oldest son bleeding on the floor between the tub and the toilet.

For weeks, the grieving family searched for signs of anything they’d missed. Then they found out that scammers masquerading as a young woman had sent Gavin nude photos – and asked him for similar images of himself. Once Gavin shared photos with them, they blackmailed him with a threat to publicize them if he didn’t pay.

The FBI has arrested a blackmailer for this:

Police in California have arrested a suspect in connection with an alleged online scam authorities said led to the suicide death of a 17-year-old boy in February... Ryan’s mother, Pauline Stuart, said police determined her son was contacted online by someone purporting to be a girl, who engaged in an online conversation which quickly turned intimate in nature.

According to authorities, the online perpetrator sent Ryan a romantic picture of a young female and asked for one of him in return. Immediately after Ryan shared an intimate photo of his own, the cybercriminal demanded $5,000, threatening to make the photo public and send it to Ryan’s family and friends, investigators said. Hours later, police said, a panicked Ryan took his own life.

It should be a PSA about this in all schools: it looks like it is happening more often than we think.

So sorry to hear that.

I'm thrilled that they were able to track down these monsters and charge them. So much that goes on online goes without consequences.

As tragic of a situation as this was, this is something that we have represented plenty enough of within our own culture and society as well. If it wasn't the Nigerians in this case, it could have easily been crooks in our own country, and I've read about plenty of such antics taking place within this country targeting the young and impressionable.

Agreed with much of the rest that I'm seeing others write in this thread, though. We need to reinforce that suicide is not the way and that any potential "shame" that is brought about by such actions (not that the naked body is anything to be ashamed of) is something that will pass.

In Canada, Bill C-13, anti-cyberbullying and revenge porn legislation, was introduced in November 2013.
It went into effect on March 9, 2015. It had largely been promoted as protecting minors, but applies to all ages.
