I'm curious to know what others experienced after surgery? I had chronic sinus infections so I had a couple of procedures done last Friday. I have absolutely no pain but the bleeding and other side-effects are so disgusting that I'm wondering when this will end and if I made the right decision???? I have moments where my sinuses are clear and I can feel the benefits of surgery...how long will I have to wait for this to be permanent?
My mother has the same thing. She had sinus surgery about 15 years ago. Unfortunately she only experienced relif from sinus infections for a few years. Her recovery time was about 2 weeks.she had several polyups removed and she had a deviated septum fixed. She has no taste and smell most of the time, so she does not enjoy eating. On the days she does have taste and smell she eats really good. She still gets sinus infections at least 3 times a year. it's less than before but she still gets them.I don't think my mom's situation is going to be the same as everyone else's. The sinus surgery really did not help her. She is going to a new ENT for the past 2 years and he said everything looked fine in her sinus cavity but she still suffers. She is always taking flonase, using saline spray. She tells people it's not fun when you can't taste and smell your own food. Do you have that problem too?
Had the sinus surgery in 2006. I had no choice because I had an infection in the maxillary sinus that wasn't going away, even after 2 months of taking Biaxin.
I had a septoplasty and the endoscopic surgery, in addition I got a rhinoplasty (nose job). Had a bump on my nose I always hated, and figured I might as well get that done while they were at it. Rhinoplasty is elective, so I paid for that portion.
Had some bleeding / gross stuff when I initially got the surgery. It was minor and expected. Recovered in 2-3 weeks. Had to keep flushing the sinuses out with the distilled water / salt solution.
I had a good 5 years of relief, but for me the sinus problems are baaaaack now. My Dr. told me that I actually had a good run out of the surgery- some people the relief doesn't last as long. From what I understand, many people who have this surgery end up having it multiple times.
I just had it done last month (this is the second time) and every so often I get my sense of smell back for brief periods of time. I can breathe better and I do not get as many sinus headaches.
I had polyups, a deviated septum and allergies. I did not experience the constant nosebleeds like many people do, but then again my nose has not bled for over ten years because of the blockage.

I had sinus surgery in 2004 after years of misery, headaches, and a long succession of sinus infections. The recovery was miserable. I had stents stitched into my nostrils and that was so uncomfortable. Their removal was even worse. After that follow-up, though, I definitely felt relief. I was stuffy for a bit but didn't have the headaches and sore throats that I was used to living with.
I went maybe a year w/o a sinus infection but they came back. I'm sure if I had been more diligent about using salt or saline spray I would have avoided a few infections I feel like my sinuses don't drain quite the way they are supposed to 8 years later but I am stil better than before surgery.
Hang in there. Recovery is tough but I think it will get better for you and you'll feel that surgery was worthwhile.
I've had 3 sinus surgeries for sinusitis in the past 10 years. 1 Turbinate reduction and 2 septoplastys'. None were sore or painful to me but very uncomfortable with 3 days of about 3 foot of packing shoved up into the nose cavity. Difficult to eat and breathe at the same time.
The 3 surgeries seem to help with some relief for about 6-8 months then all symptoms returned 100%.
Come to find out after seeing numerous so called specialists on the subject I find that all the problems over these years were caused by certain food allergies. The last serious bout where I could hardly breathe an ENT referred me to an alergist who was a holistic doctor specializing in natural remedies along with certain prescription drugs. He put me on prednisone 4mg for one week and had me start a 'glutton free diet'. Within one week following his instructions and starting the diet all my symptoms dissapeared and I've been free of problems since. He also suggested that I use a 8oz Netti Rinse squeeze Bottle (not a Netti Pot) filled with water and 6 drops of Johnson Baby Shampoo added to clear any crust obstructions that may arise. I do this 2-3 times daily and what a difference it makes in breathing. You can actually feel the solution go completely through your sinus canal sytem. I've had sinus problems for over 40 years and now I'm happy to have permanent relief.
He claimed that a high percentage of people with sinusitis actually have food allergies that are causing their problems. We discovered my allergies were products with wheat such as wheat bread and beer made with wheat barley, dairy milk, soda pop, cheeses and a few other items. I switched to glutten free bread, Silk Soy milk, glutten free beer (Red Bridge by Anhauer Busch) plus I look for other glutten free products found at the supermarket organics dept. It works for me. After over 40 years of suffering I'm happy as a lark to be able to breathe normally.
^^ That is great, Nitram! Glad they could narrow your problem down to something and determine what was causing it.
I just came off a course of Prednisone as well (10 days) for the sinuses / allergies. God, I feel like a human being again! I hope this lasts, and in the mean time, have cut out dairy and wheat. I turned up allergic to both as a kid.
Oh color me jealous. I would give anything to breath normally! Headed off the allergist in a bit. I have a feeling it will be the Predisone with antibiotics to clear me up.
