[quote=miguel's mom;2909639]Izzy, you are very lucky lately!!! Congrats!

Brrrr Jeannie. Snow... Hope it won't come here too!

Lunch was Bavarian style with fried sausage, cooked potatoes and sauerkraut.

Miguel's mom, I forget where you are in Europe. Is it England or Germany? Or maybe someplace else. I just want to tell you that if you have that lunch again, I am coming over to eat with you. I love mashed potatoes and sauerkraut mixed together. The potatoes have very little flavor and the sauerkraut has a lot of flavor and they really taste good to get a little sauerkraut on the fork and dip it in mashed potatoes. There is not much better than sausage. You have my mouth watering.

sausage is my weakness. I do stay away from red meat but sausage is hard for me to resist. Actually talking about it now after this stomach thing is doing nothing for me. Oh, and I love sauerkraut. My mother use to make them with dumplings, yummy!

Were the dumplings separate or with the sauerkraut. I think sauerkraut is an acquired taste. Have you ever seen sauerkraut being made. Mom used to make it in a jar about the size of an old fashioned butter churn and she also made pickled corn like that. The best part of the sauerkraut was the core of the cabbage. She would peel the cabbage away and throw the stalk in too. My mother was a super mom who really could make food taste good.

I don't remember how she made it but I do remember they were together in the pan. Probably not as unique as your Mom did.

Practicing for NC. You have the "yours is better than mine" down pat.

Mom just made sauerkraut from scratch. We lived on a farm, so everything from butter to pickled beans and dried beans was made from scratch. I mean everything. The only things we bought from the store for years was flour, coffee, salt, and sugar. Dad would buy a huge box of candy (chocolate drops, peppermint sticks, covered coconut, and coconut mounds, if I remember correctly) every Christmas. He also bought apples from Brushy Mountains in the Fall and peaches from SC in peach season. He would sometimes come home with a big watermelon. We killed two hogs and one calf every year and grew green beans, Irish potatoes, green peas, corn, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cornfield peas, radishes, beets, cabbage, turnips, grapes, blackberries, squash, etc. We had a few chickens for Sunday dinner and eggs from them also. Reddies River ran through the middle of our 100 acres, so there were trout to eat in Summer. My mother milked two and sometimes three cows every day. We grew our own pop corn and corn for the animals and corn to make corn meal. Dad made sure we had lots of fruits like bananas and oranges in the Winter. He didn't like for us to get sick.

I have never seen dumplings with sauerkraut, but it sounds good for the reason that potatoes and sauerkraut are good. It would tone down that flavor a little. Usually we had corn bread and sauerkraut. I don't remember ever having dumplings with anything but stewed chicken until I was married. I have had Japanese dumplings when eating out.

If I remember correctly, there may have been pork in it also. I want to say it is a German recipe. My grandfather was German and my grandmother was Swedish on my mother's side.

Good to know that you know such strange sounding food. I'm in Germany and you're all welcome to the next Bavarian lunch!!!
