Good morning! So our computer has seemed to picked up some kind of a virus and things are moving really slow. Hubby sat down trying to fight the little bugger and ended up deleting things he shouldn't have. Anyone know what I need to do next? I don't want to do the restoration discs because I think that will delete everything, including all my pictures. Anyhoo, off to the pediatrician with my daughter this morning. That earache of hers is still bothering her. Coffee with sugar in the raw and soymilk...
...happy Tuesday everyone! Jeannie
Good morning all. Breakfast was the same as usual. Lunch will probably be a Subway 6" sandwich.

Jeannie, depending on the type of computer and how old it is, there are several options. First, if you click "Start" then roll over "All Programs." Another menu should pop up, and then roll over "Accessories" then when the next menu pops up, rollover "System Tools" and go down to and click on "System Restore". This function doesn't require any disks, and will go back to specific periods of time (bolded days on the calendar). Hopefully, there was a restore point fairly recently. Click on the most recent day and go through the acknowledgement steps. Your computer should reboot and reset itself to the programs on that date (even if you deleted them, I believe). If that doesn't work, please let me know.
Oh... and by the way, LavaSoft has a product called Adaware. There's a free download (and a purchasable one). Take the free download, install it, and run it. There's also another one called Spybot by a different company. They are recommended and safe by a computer manufacturer/company I deal with. For viruses and other things, that just goes to the virus protection software you have, the settings, and the firewall provided. Security settings often are a pain in the bum, so people open their computer wide open instead of taking a couple seconds to click "OK".
I asked Mr. VA. Run virus protection--you have probably already done that.
(1) Click on control panel
(2) Click on performance and maintenance
(3) Click on Rearrange items on your hard disk to make programs run faster
(4) Click on analyze
(4) Click on Defrag
Then never go on snopes again--my advise. I have been on that place a couple of times and my virus protection goes crazy.
Over a year ago we got a virus and had to start over.
He said the firewall should be in place immediately when you start up the computer if you start over. When we had the virus, he started over and before he could get the firewall up it attacked again.
Advice is usually worth what you pay for it and you paid nothing for this. Use at your own risk.
Hope you get to keep your pictures, but you may not.

Rath, I am guessing you are software. Mr. VA is hardware. Are you suggesting going back so far that the virus is not there? Every once in a while we delete everything that is not necessary. Pictures take up an enormous amount of space. My computer has gotten slow several times when I am on city-data. I run a virus check and there is always a tracking cookie. Once I had 17 tracking cookies. They are not dangerous, but they really slow down the computer. I now do a virus check right after being on here and rid myself of these things.
Jeannie, Magnum Mike is really into computers too. Mr. VA does try and error. He keeps everything necessary on disks. Our computer is old too. No use to buy another one until this one stops is my way of thinking.
It is cold outside and the wind is howling!

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate it. Going to try some of your ideas. Steve, we have Ad-aware Personal and when I do a full system scan, its freezes when it scans where the virus is. Then I have to shut down the computer. My husband spoke with someone and they said they don't have anything to fix this type of virus yet. I took my daughter to the pediatrician today and she has an ear infection and possibly walking pneumonia. She starts antibiotics today along with Albuterol. On a positive note, I gave the ped's office a resume and they asked me to come in for an interview on Thursday.
