We are relocating to the dallas area from New Jersey and need to be near the airport. After internet research and reading these forums we have narrowed it down to Southlake, Colleyville, Grapevine (or another I missed)?

We have a 600k - 700k budget and have 2 middle school aged kids and 2 elementary. School district is #1 importance. One middle school aged is special needs so we have to consider services as well.

Here is the breakdown from the Newsweek top 100 high schools:

Keller 542
Southlake 559
Grapevine 349
Colleyville Heritage 172

Our district in Nj is ranked 560 now. I know to take these number with a grain of salt but on the forum seems like people think Carroll in Southlake is the best. From people that live there now can you give your opinion? We also would like a safe neighborhood where people will accept people from NJ with easy access to the airport.

Thanks so much!!!

I did not grow up in Southlake but my best friend did and I grew up visiting him. I'm not a big suburb fan at all but I would definitely choose Southlake

I would go with Southlake, Keller, Valley Ranch area or Trophy Club.

I'd put Coppell on the list too, and do some research about the best special needs programs for your child's specific capability needs as a primary factor in the decision. These towns are all about 10-15 minute drive of each other so you can take advantage of any town's amenities, and all of them have great schools, so a big dividing factor has to be your own kids' fit into the schools' academic, and extra-cirr. programs.

I too think that Southlake would be at the top. I also agree with Squirl that you should consider Coppell too.

People here are very accepting of people from NJ. Lots of people relocating from NJ, what's going on over there? I have worked with 8 families from NJ last year alone and currently working with 2...

It seems like more than half the people in DFW suburbs have relocated from the East or West coast....being from NJ has no stigma whatsoever!

Coppell and Southlake are two great options for schools, your budget, and airport proximity.

Was that Northern or Southern Jersey? I live(d) in Rittenhouse in Philadelphia and was routinely chased away from Old City by the Camden crowd. But alas no hard feelings.

concur with your budget being over 500k I would look no futher than Southlake or Coppell.

Biggest difference is that the lots in Coppell will be smaller. Southlake used to be (not sure if it still is) ALL 1/2 minium lots.
Southlake (Carroll ISD) has it's HS split into 2 separte campuses Carroll High 9&10 and Carroll senior 11&12. They run a shuttle between the 2 for kids who need classes at one campus or the other. I perfer tradional HS 4 years together
Coppell has 1 tradtional HS 9-12 and a new Technology HS also 9-12

Both areas have EXCELLENT schools and tons of families and activites.
Coppell has an Rec/Aquatic center. Southlake does not.

as others have said...TONs of transplants so not to worry. southlake does seem to draw more CA transplants though.

BOTH very close to airport!

Thanks so much for taking time to respond everyone! Numbers only get you so far, real experience is priceless! Thanks for the head up on Coppell I will look into it, I completely missed that area. Also re-assuring to know that there is no NJ stigma!

Link to Coppell's special education dept. Betcha one of the folks there could answer questions and guide you to the best school districts based on the needs of your child.
