Hello All, I may be relocating for work near Naval Air Station. I believe its Grand Prairie. I have searched this forum for the good areas near there so that the commute is minimal.

Everyone seems to say avoid the South of Dallas and the traffic is horrible during rush hours. I live in Dublin OH near Ballantrae and my commute is like less than 5 minutes away. Houses here are in the 350K nice safe and good school. I like to know what other areas would be good in Grand Prairie or close to it with good elementary schools and safe since I have 2 kids 10 and 7.

I have been looking south of I20 zip 75052 and Las Colinas, FM, Carrollton but all are 12-15 miles away. I plan to rent in my first year (1000-1300 range) and purchase a house later 250K max if it is good. Please help me if you are close to the area I mentioned above. Thanks,

In addition to South Grand Prairie (zip code: 75052), which is pretty close, you might also consider looking in Cedar Hill. Another option is Mansfield, although it is further out.

All,

Is the commute from South I20 Grand Prairie up North such as Irving pretty bad during peak hours? Is that a good area to raise kids?

Irving ISD (school district) is not very good, so if you pick Irving make sure it feeds into Coppell ISD.

North Irving in Valley Ranch/Las Colinas has better rated Irving ISD schools
but that is farther to commute

renting house in that price range in better ISD won't be easy--especially if you want something around 2000 sq ft

you might consider the Mid-Cities/Grapevine area--
HEB ISD and Grapevine-colleyville ISD--well regarded districts
would use 360 for travel and either Airport Frwy/183 or maybe 157 and surface roads

check a map
and check rentals with realtor.com --that is only RE site we can recommend--to see what rental prices are here

my husband has someone working in his company who has lived in Grand Prairie and had two daughters graduate from there--they did very well in school--one has graduated from UNT with degree in education/Spanish and the other is attending TCU on music scholarship...
GPISD just has large numbers of low-income/ethnic students who often dilute the efforts of better students at those schools--

Check and make sure it is Grand Prairie. Air operations there ceased a LONG time ago and moved to NAS JRB in Fort Worth (formerly Carswell AFB). The former operations/barracks side of the base now houses some federal office buildings and a couple of reserve military units.
