Yep that's probably in Munger Place Historic District -- see: Munger Place Historic District - Home - if not it's in Junius Heights Historic District, where I live - see also: Garden Cafe - Dallas, TX, 75214-5311 - Citysearch about the great "Garden Cafe" across the street - also you could do some searches on that -- it's a great hangout owned by a retired big time lawyer who grew up in Lakewood. He bought the whole block plus a couple of houses and lots.

Also there is a great little park across the street which has just been redone.

Thanks so much, Lakewooder.

I've heard mix reviews about the road Gaston (it is scary). is this true?

There is a really cute duplex to rent in that area .... from the pictures it looks like a nice area for my dogs.

It depends on what you expect. It is not anti-septic, like the popular suburbs.
There are very charming old houses, some lovingly renovated, next to deteriorated ruins. There are multi-million $$ mansions on Swiss and a few miles away you've got run down multi-family homes.
It is a very interesting area.

Most of the apartments (which replaced mansions in the 1950s - there are still a lot of them around) have been bought by developers, so they probably won't be there for long.

A friend of mine rented a really nice historical home on Munger a few years back, I loved the house. Yes it's an older neighborhood, and its close to downtown, that alone scares a lot of people without knowing the facts. Like someone else said you can have a well maintained older home next to one that should be condemned. If you are unsure, just go and check it out. From what I can tell, it seems to be pretty good area. I would also suggest going to the DPD website ans using their crime map feature.

Gaston Avenue itself is also a little bit of everything. There are areas with liquors stores, and dive bars, and there are areas with gated communitites featuring huge homes.

Gaston has a strong undercurrent going on. Developers slowly gobbling everything up. It's poised for a serious change. That area is going to balloon in value over the next 5 years.

I would go have breakfast or lunch at the Garden Cafe across the street and strike up a few conversations. People are pretty friendly around here..

Lakewooder -- I'm confused... (it happens). Are you meaning that the old mansions won't be there for long or the apartments?

I have checked out many of your links that you have posted on this board about Lakewood and I love it. Unfortunately, we can't really afford a house (yet) in that area, so we're looking to rent for now.
