Thanks for taking the time to read my first post here and I apologize in advance if it becomes longish.I am finally moving to Dallas towards the end of this year from Virginia and will be in the housing market as a first-time home buyer. Now here comes the tricky part.I want to live in as close a proximity to downtown as possible, but my cap on buying power is 125K,roughly as I make a modest income and although I hope Dallas holds prosperity for me financially, I am moving there mostly because housing is affordable and I really like the people there as a whole.I have spent the last couple of weeks stuffing my head with housing updates and real estate listings and it can be overwhelming to say the least, especially when you really don't know the area. The only real commitment I have is to my 8-year old American Rottie who is coming with me and I know that could be a factor in deciding between some communities who may not accept his breed...I am open to single family homes or condos/townhomes and would really appreciate anything anyone could suggest to me.
Sincerely,
Rick
Fredericksburg,VA

Try 75206 and search for condos and townhomes - there's a really good area of well-built converted apartments bounded by Greenville, Lover's Lane, Skillman and the DART line/Katy Trail expansion. About four of the complexes which have not been converted to condos are slated to be torn down for new development which should be great for your investment.

Thanks Lakewooder.I have been reading several of your posts and I appreciate the way you offer your opinion to people here.I am so excited about moving to Dallas and I am not expecting this to be a pit stop for me.I want to make a life for myself there and am in this for the long haul,so short-term prosperity doesn't really interest me.I want to be near downtown(or rail system at least)because I'm single and will go to every Mavs game I can(have been a fan since '85).Thanks again and I'm going to realtor.com right now so I can search 75206!

You're welcome - you'd be very close to the Lover's Lane DART station and SMU has a free shuttle for anyone in the area. You could also walk or drive to the Mockingbird Station or White Rock Lake Station.
