Until then, I'm sticking with Plano "outpaces" Frisco.

There is something to be said about small schools (FISD) vs mega-schools (PISD), but Frisco has yet to leverage the smaller schools to improve performance. If OP wants small AND great schools, I'd point them towards Coppell as a better choice for a sub-$400k home budget than Frisco.
I am not a fan of Plano, but TC80 has a great post comparing the two school systems.

OMG. Seriously?! This forum is trying to kill me today. Frisco's schools are better than Propser's !! (not saying much)

Prosper=
#36 ranked SAT score (1049......that's below the worst Frisco school and 150 points below Plano West)

2 National Merit Semi-Finalists in 2011. = .9% of senior class. (basically equal % to Frisco and less than half of Plano ISD's % of class).

Last 3 years college choice of top 2 gradates = 3 to A&M, 3 to UT. No Ivy, No T20, and only T50 is UT Austin.

I rest my case.

Didn't we just go through this whole deal about how it's not fair to say that St Mark's kids aren't good at math and science just because nobody (hardly anyone) from St. Mark's goes to CalTech and MIT?

Point is, maybe the top kids in Propser, TX don't want to go to Harvard. Doesn't mean they aren't as smart as kids in Plano. Nor does it necessarily mean they received an inferior education.

There's a great blog called dallas-area-schools.blogspot.com that posts all kinds of educational statistics. The Dallas Morning News publishes the college choice of Vals & Sals every spring. DMN also publishes National Merit info. The TEA website has info on AP pass rates, SAT scores, AP scholars, etc. Most high schools publish a "school profile" on their website with info on courses offered, college admissions placement, SAT, ACT, AP, GPA, class rank. These profiles are sent in with college applications so the colleges can discern how competitive a high school is and how the student stacked unto his high whoop competition.

It's all public info; just have to dig around.

I agree with this. We bought new in Houston in an area where things were growing like Frisco. The next thing you knew, the little side street next to us was straight access on the the Interstate. Never trust the builder on what the vacant lot will be! It has more chance to be a Super-walmart than a nice little quiet church.

I also think you will be fighting new-home-prices in Frisco for many years to come if you need to sell in the next 5 years.

It amazes me. Parents come on here saying education is their top priority....until they get distracted by the shiny NEW! BIG! home in a lesser school district.

My parents could have bought a palace with acreage in Plano or Garland or Rockwall in the 1980's. Instead, they spent nearly $300k in 1986 to buy a cottage in HPISD because of the schools.

If education is the top priority, you sacrifice on home (size, age, amenities) to buy the best damn education you can for your kids.

If it's not a top priority, that's another thing. But don't say it is and then buy a home zoned to the 35th ranked SAT.

You're not making an equal comparison-> top St Mark's kids are not choosing MIT because they're going to other T20 schools. MIT and UPenn/Yale are in the same league; Baylor and A&M are not.

The SAT scores and NMSF % in Prosper would indicate those students never had a fighting chance at Harvard. They're going to UT and A&M because that's the quality of students they are- and more telling, those schools are "aspirational" in Prosper (vs aspiring to H/Y/P/S at Plano, Highland Park, Southlake, Coppell,'etc).
