Hi

My boyfriend's company is relocating from Chicago to Dallas, and we just found out that we have 2 weeks before he needs to start down there. Eep.

To give you some frame of reference, here are the things that would go on my ideal rental checklist:
- an older house/building with vintage features (closer to 1900 than 1980... clawfoot bathtub, decorative molding, built-in hutches, etc)
- front porch
- backyard or located in a neighborhood with lots of trees and gardens
- neighborhood with all the artsy hipster attractions: used book stores, thrift stores, indie coffee shops, historic theatre that plays second run movies, etc.
- pet friendly

... I realize that list would be far more applicable in a city like Portland or Asheville or Austin or Silverlake, and I'm prepared to make quite a few compromises in order to meet Dallas on it's terms.
But are there any neighborhoods that come close to that? I've been checking out the posts on this forum, and it seems like the following neighborhoods might fit the bill?
Deep Ellum
Exposition Park
Junius Heights
Hollywood Heights
North Oak Cliff
Bishop Arts District

Ideally, we're looking for a 2-3 bedroom for $1,000 or less. Is that unrealistic for those neighborhoods?
Are there any other similar neighborhoods that we should check out?
Should we just throw in the towel and get a generic apartment in a mega complex with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances?

Thanks so much!

You can probably find what you are looking for in Junius Heights or lower Swiss Ave area. Look at Power Properties. Or when you come for a visit - drive around - the best deals are a sign in the yard.

Cross Expo Park and Deep Ellum - no houses there; just rehabbed lofts, etc.

Thanks for the info, and the lead on Power Properties - their Historic units are totally in line with what we're looking for!

I would look in the Bishop Arts/North Oak Cliff area. The historic theater in the area, the Kessler, plays live music though, not movies.

There is an historic movie theater in Oak Cliff, the Texas Theatre, which now shows arthouse/indie movies

The attributes are features of any city with a history dating to the period, and Dallas was at least as large as any of those in the timeline.

2-3 bedrooms for under $1000 is going to be hard in any area you would consider safe...just keep your surroundings in mind
