This question cracks me up!

SO many of my friends in Dallas are liberals. Two of them are transplants from the midwest, lol! My next door neighbors were a gay couple, and they were super liberal. I'm not, and we got along great. As long as we don't heavily discuss politics, it's all good!

Oak Lawn, Oak Cliff, Uptown, Lakewood, Lake Highlands...full of liberals and independents and conservatives, etc.

I know what you mean though--if your workplace environment is the kind where you have to either keep your mouth shut during lunch conversations or mouth platitudes you don't believe in, then work is not a very fun place

my husband works in FTW and most of the people at his company that he is a peer of are so Republican and religious conservative his job has gotten to be like a mine field--especially since the Iraq war started...they have totally bought into the Bush phenomena and are just wearing blinders about any adverse news--they only watch Fox --
what makes him the craziest is that most of them are apparently very religious and those literal religious conservatives that don't allow any other interpretations--yet some of these guys make their living from their science degrees that DEFINITELY prove the Bible cannot be taken as fact... if they TRULY believed the Bible was fact, they never would have gone into the fields they have...

Even as a Liberal, I have to disagree with you on this. Science does not definitively disprove the Bible. To the contrary, it merely confirms a lot of what the Bible says. Scientists have in fact proved that the plagues of locusts and such DID happen.

Granted, the Bible presents the occurences in more of a mythological (for lack of a better word) way than we now understand some things to be.

I am very much a Christian. I believe in both Creation and Evolution. God Created the original foundations and laws of our universe that started the formation of planets and solar systems. He then populated them with life forms, and not only allowed them to evolve, but encouraged it.

All the crazy extremist Right-wing religious fanatics that you find screaming condemnation from their collective pulpits are merely so afraid of what truly lies in their hearts, that they must find people who THEY deem are "worse" than they are in their own hearts.

You rarely see TRUE Christians condemning folks to Hell at the drop of a hat. TRUE Christians are open to the beauty of God and all of his Creation. I personally believe that God gave us the ability to think because he wants us to grow and understand the world around us and the wonder of it all.

For some reason, people continue to push the idea that Science and Religion are mutually exclusive. They most certainly are not. Science can often times explain the "How" but not always the "why". When scientists put together all the basic building blocks of life, they still cannot CREATE life. Sure, they can clone and manipulate existing cells to grow body parts and such, but, they cannot create brand-new life.

Just my two cents worth.

I'm very confused. You claim that you are liberal. However, you are offended by someone asking you where you go to church? Liberals are supposed to be tolerant of other faiths and viewpoints. I must be wrong.

You've also jumped to the conclusion that church membership means Republican Party membership or a conservative world-view. Jumping to conclusions based on that reason is also, well, not very liberal thinking.

Perhaps you need to move to Collin County with the rest of the conservatives. I wouldn't dub myself "liberal" with your lack of tolerance and prejudice against other viewpoints.

Tons. If you can't find them, you're not looking hard enough. Or at all.

Oh yea, happened to me. And they do not know when to shut up. The irony is that I am actually more to the Right, but Bible Thumpers annoy me.

But yes, Dallas has all kinds of people. Its ironic that all of that moral posturing coexists right next to some of the highest levels of hedonism I have seen.

I'm baffled by this thread.
I'm an atheist, a Democrat, and a Dallasite. I've had little problem over the years finding like-minded people to hang out with.

Oh for Heaven's sake hamiltonpl...

And thanks to all who've commiserated with me on the conservative workplace question. That's my beef more than anything.

We went off last Holiday Season (yeah, I said it) to the office party and the big kahuna asks us to bow our heads for prayer and he goes off and ends it "in Jesus' name". I looked at the lone Indian guy in the group and wondered how he coped before I got here. I have no problem with religion, just don't push it in my face and that is something I feel a whole lot of Conservatives here are incapable of comprehending. I am sick to death of the smarmy looks and better-than-thou crap. Why can't they just let it go and comprehend that my (utter) disbelief in their religion has nothing to do with me being against them? That it has nothing to do with being Democrat? In fact, it has nothing to do with anything?

But anyway, I must have been looking for friends in the wrong places, or maybe I just gave up too soon. The company I work for is the best most diverse place at Manhattan HQ but here it's the Barnum and Bailey Circus.

Boy, do I feel caged.

Re: Gays

I have met so many racist gay folk down here it's unbelievable. So many anti-Mexican diatribes I felt I needed to call gay friends in the Village and have them come down here en masse to wage war on their counterparts.

NYrInTexas,

That's hilarious. One Friday I walk in in my 'NY 4 Spitzer' t-shirt and a curious workmate googles Spitz... and then everything changes and I get one liners from him from then on. It's unbelievable.

DallasDreamer you are awesome! I very much agree with your comments about like-mindedness. Here is why.

I went to college in DENTON,TEXAS and there are MANY "liberals" and libertarian-ish type people there. I simply DO NOT agree with many of their annoying version concerning liberalism, such as legalizing POT? Hello, do we need more numb skulls in society? No, we don't. Look at Britney Spears for the love of God. Should it be used as a medicine? Yes, (I heard it helps people with cancer eat better) but it should not be available to the public for recreational purposes.

Also groups of liberals and libertarian type people in Denton think they can just do whatever they feel like, say whatever they feel like even if it contradicts being "liberal", and act how ever they want and enforce it in dogmatic ways upon others. UM do you get that? That is NOT liberal. IMO it is just low class ignorance, and poor quality thinking.

Not to mention I have MET "liberals" in Denton that talk trash about gays such as "how could gay men have sex!? ick that is just disturbing" YET they choose to vote against the bill that stated how marriage is between a man and woman. Talk about hypocritical nonsense. Make up your minds. These types of people just go along causing annoyance everywhere they go, I am pretty sure of that. Don't DISS homosexuals if you are trying to help them out politically...that is just DUMB. If you don't like gays then be a conservative. I was even told by a left of center person that being gay is just unnatural yet he was some herb obsessed hippy. OMG weird!

I've even known liberal gay men that get freaked out because I am gay. LOL. Isn't that hilarious. A psychologist told me that there is a lot of internalized homophobia, so gay "liberals" are prejudice of other gays for being gay. Well isn't that just wonderful. More issues a gay man has to WORRY about. Well that is Denton Liberal For You. Too much Pot and Alcohol there has surely messed with their minds. I am glad I still have a brain and high IQ. Even though I felt dumber from living in that Godawful town. LMAO.

Hahahaha It's a really good point that political and religious beliefs don't necessarily have anything to do with whether a person can be a good friend or not. Although it's nice to have friends who think just as you do, it's good also to hear a different perspective.

Also, in terms of being "very liberal," there are many definitions. "Libertarians" might think themselves liberal, yet so could someone with socialist tendencies. But this pair is not likely to be sympatico when it comes to discussing gov't policy. One might be liberal in one sense but not so liberal in other ways. So even finding another "liberal" person doesn't guarantee like-mindedness.
