On the SmartMeter itself, I have one and glad I do. If you recall a couple of winters ago when Texas had rolling power outages during a hard, statewide freeze, the SmartMeter was a saving grace. At about sunrise sometime I heard my PC rebooting, then went back to sleep. Woke up again when it rebooted again so got up to investigate. During an online opportunity I found out about the rolling outage, just in time for the next one. The outages were hourly and off for 15 minutes each. As the next one began I called the Elec company - using cell phone - and during the push button voice process I punched in RESIDENTIAL. Two minutes later my electricity was back on and did NOT go off for the rest of the day. So, I had internet and continuous heat. That would not have been possible with analog metering.
WOW.... So much to think about with an impending move to the DFW...

What they should do is take control of the thermostats of the recipient class in government housing.
Where are you - some place like New Jersy? You have no clue what you're talking about... ONCOR is changing out ALL the old style watt-hour meters for the new Smart Meters and customers have no say-so about it. After the change human meter-readers are no longer needed, plus a lot of other cost-saving features to ONCOR. No customer is being offered anything to do anything. No bureaucrat is controlling anything. Um, okay?

Arent there deals on electricity if you agree to limit useage during peak demand times or agree to a periodic limited shut off during rolling outages? I have read about that option perhaps not in Tx?

Are you saying that you do not have the new Smart Meter yet? You do not have to request it. If you don't already have a Smart Meter I suspect ONCOR will change-out your old style watt-hour meters sometime in the next six months or so. You will get a Smart Meter eventually...

I wondered if you actually knew which watt-hour meter you had...and whether you even took the time to look.

So, now that you have checked and confirmed that you already have a Smart Meter you are able to sign-up to monitor your electricity usage if you wish.

Would she be the one to change a flat tire as you hold the flashlight for her?

You're welcome.

Looks like Farmers Electric Coop customer can't use this, its only for areas of Texas open to electric competition (de-regulated)
