I absolutely agree with HockDad. I think if parents put in the time with their kids and give them the necessary resources, there is NO reason why they shouldn't make it into IVY League Schools.

But do YOU know what the necessary resources are? All signs point to no...

LOL.

I think a better test would be to do it at lunch time. The last time I saw an Indian at suppertime at a Mexican place was the last time I had a date prior to meeting my wife...

You do not see many Indians at Hooters or a steak place either...

Supermarkets would be the best place. IHOPS are another.

Riiiight.

Don't let the "conservative" in this url distract you from this fine article on who gets into Tier 1 schools. The article was referred to in the NYT recently.

The author goes into who gets into "ivies" and why. He uses hard data from the schools themselves.

It depends on your family income and assets and the college. Most still require students to take out loans if they do not have the cash. Most kids still have to pay on average 20K per year in costs.

Only Princeton has a "no loans" policy. Students do have to work part-time on campus as well though.

I think each family has to run the numbers and look at starting salaries for the chosen field to see if it is worth it. If you make more than 60K a year, UT or OU will probably be the best choice for most fields.

The highest starting salaries these days are for petroleum engineers. They make 80K right out of school and 100K with 2 years experience. And work in no income tax states. Ditto for Chemical Engineering. UT or A&M are the best.

The same can be said for pre-med. A pre-med at UT will be a lot further ahead than one from an Ivy financially.

And when you consider that the center of gravity for US business is shifting to Texas out of CA, IL, and NY, I am not so sure that you would want to go to an Ivy for anything other than MBA. You will still have to move back to TX.

Starting salaries are higher in investment banking and management consulting. But you have to go to one of a half dozen schools to start there with a BA.

Why don't you read the whole chain.

Highland Park Village is not the mecca of diversity I was lead to believe when I moved to Park Cities? I knew something was fishy when they didn't have an after Kwanzaa sale at Hermes...

I believe the poster simply meant that if parents are properly engaged and involved daily in their kids' educational careers, the chances are great that they'll excel and achieve moreso than children of, shall we say, distracted parents. Just a view from the outside looking in...

Agreed to this...Two posters decided to take it to a different level of irritation. People are asking for information not judgement. Unless you are sitting at the dinner table with the OP, there is no need to make comments on what they know, or dont know, and certainly there is no place to talk/judge other people children.

Why the comments on indians and steak. I am a proud fillet mignon eater and proud of it. Lets not "lump" indians into the sari/tradtional/veg/south indian category.

India is a Vast Country and the North (traditionally meat eating) and the south(traditionally veg) are two completely different animals (no pun intended). And there are also north indians who are veg and south indians who eat meat.

The language/culture/dress are COMPLETELY different...the only common language is hindi and english. Even within the culture are subcultures.

We are an indian (american raised family) and our entire family (even back in the homeland) are meat eaters and *newsflash* dont eat indian food everyday.

In fact most of us are foodies...all cuisines and cultures are welcome. IHOP= IYUCK. Personaly I like my old fashioned 50's diners that have a 100 things on the menu!

**Just a little bit of education before you lump an entire culture/ethnic background into one category**
