Hi all
My husband and I are considering buying a house in the Firewheel area and want to know which schools (at elementary level) are the best to send our little girl to? We are Caucasian if that makes a difference ...
Can anyone recommend a particular school?
Thank you
Steph

Depending on where in the Firewheel area you locate the two "neighborhood" schools are Abbett and Luna. Abbett is on Muirfield in Firewheel off of N. Garland Ave (there are pics on here of the area around the school and of the school - see the "sticky" on the top of the threads and mine is the "pics around my area"). Luna Elem is in The Greens and located on Lochness. Both are good schools and you could find a home right by the school where it is easier to walk to school than drive . Or there are some around the area that you would have to drive. Good luck and welcome to the neighborhood

If you have any questions about the area or whatever you can pm me.

OH!!! If your interested in the magnet programs right now the testing and application process is under way. You can live anywhere in the GISD and attend a magnet school. I have a child at the magnets and one at the neighborhood school. If you find a house and have a contract that is all you need to show to apply for the testing if you don't already reside in the GISD.

Both of the schools north of 190 are good. As is Spring Creek down by Hawaiian Falls.

Garland has open choice enrollment, so you can choose any school granted it is not over crowded, and you provide transportation.

Which also makes for some interesting football recruiting in HS.

Oh, man, when DD was on HS drill team you should have heard the stories and the rantings. I thought Homer Johnson was going to keel over with delight when Garland got their own football district. Garland HS = District champs forever and ever.

I subbed MS around the district and would hear the kids talking about who'd come to their practice and how cool this workout room was, etc. At that point DD had graduated and it was finally amusing.

it's true, they even recruit for academics. My cousin was in the Gifted and Talented program. He attended a magnet school in elementary, and our neighborhood school in middle school. when it came time for him to enter high school, Garland, North Garland, and even Naaman were vying for him.

Mary & Murph,

I had no idea this had started going on for real... it seems like it could really throw things off-balance pretty quickly, though.

P.S. Hey Mary, you've been pretty quiet lately! Good to "see" ya!
