Are there any bbq joints that have decent side dishes? I'm not sure how an uncooked onion became acceptable as a bbq side, especially since you have a grill right there, but if they have that as an option, I'm saying their choice of sides is bad. Also most have mac & cheese only fit to serve a young child, and insanely greesy green beans.

Are there any local bbq joints that have something like a chef making sides?

Hard 8 has some decent side items but I felt the BBQ left more to be desired. Smoke has a good brunch menu with a wide variety of items and pretty good BBQ meats.

I was disappointed in Hard 8 after hearing all the rave reviews. IMO, Pecan Lodge blows everything away in DFW. If you don't want to wait in line, go to Lockhart Smokehouse (I've only tried the Bishop Arts location), which is nearly as good, and has a bar and live music on Fri nights. I think those are the only two in DFW that would rival Salt Lick (in Dripping Springs). The airport Salt Lick is fine (better than burger king), but nothing at all like the original.

I agree Pecan Lodge has been the best so far in Dallas that I've tried. We went to San Diego recently and had Phil's BBQ and it was GREAT and was thinking all the time why Dallas can't do something similar. It's been a while since I've had Lockhart's so will have to give it another shot.

I'm tempted to just buy a BGE and just smoke brisket myself

We love Hard 8--another vote for them. And we've tried a lot of BBQ.

Sonny Bryans is a fav of my husband's

We were NOT impressed with Bartley's. It was pretty bad, honestly.

Concur on Pecan Lodge - best central tx BBQ in town. Quick tip - they have an 'express' line with MUCH shorter waits if you're willing to buy 5# or more.

Re: sides -- their mac and cheese and collard greens are fantastic.

Also concur on Meshack's.

Re: BGE - I have one and smoke brisket, and while good, it doesn't touch what Pecan Lodge puts out. BBQ is all about pitmaster skill and consistency, which is why IMO it doesn't scale and the chains will never touch pecan lodge, lockhart, franklin's, snow's, etc. etc. etc.

We like Hard 8 as well but agree it can be inconsistent.

Word on the street is Pecan Lodge will be opening their new place May 23rd. I hear it will be open for lunch and dinner.
