There is a small addition to my house, made by a prior owner. I want to redo the room. I don't think anyone pulled permits when they added the room. I was going to change the HVAC, electrical and maybe some plumbing in that room, so I'm assuming permits are required. Am I going to run into issues because the lack of prior permits for this room?

If the prior addition wasn't permitted, and you go to apply for permits for new work, I am pretty sure you're going to have to get permits for the addition as well.

Do you know the procedure on this? Do I just call and tell them that there's prior stuff that wasn't permitted and then have them inspect it?

I think you are okay. With the new permits, you will have to meet the current code so you might have an issue if something wasn't done correctly, but I don't know that there is an issue that it wasn't orginally permitted as long as the new work is. Does that make sense?

I would talk to your contractor about it.

UPDATE: The contractors pulled permits for the room. There was a back wall that wasn't previously permitted, but the entire wall was replaced anyway, so it was a moot point.

FWIW, if you have previously non-permitted work, and you pull new ones, they may inspect the prior work and make you bring it up to code.
