What are the areas to avoid nearby Love Field? Is it due to the schools or just awful/unsafe in general?
You absolutely DO not want to live in the following neighborhoods surrounding Love Field:
High crime- the area between Northwest Hwy / 35/ Walnut Hill / Marsh.
High crime - the area between Cedar Springs / 35/ Dallas North Tollroad / Love Field
Moderately high crime- the area between Lemon / Inwood/ Lovers / Cedar Springs (there are some legitimately nice blocks close to Inwood & Mockingbird in a small enclave called the Bird Streets, but public schools are bad there).

For public schools, if you are interested in paying more to have almost no commute, you'll want to focus on the following Dallas ISD elementary schools. You can find their attendance maps on DISD's website.
DeGoyler
Withers
Preston Hollow
Kramer
Jackson
Lakewood
Lee
Hexter

You could also look in Lake Highlands neighborhood of northeast Dallas. Schools are good, just don't rent in any apartment complexes as most are run down and a different tenant mix than the single family home neighborhoods. Stay south of Forest/ LBJ. Very sought after in-town neighborhood (despite my description!)

Highland Park ISD- the closest to Love Field, the top public district in Texas, but $$$

in the end you will find better value in Carrollton as far as rent and public schools. Its only about a 20 minute drive.

Euless will be about a 35-40 minute drive and has good schools and higher rents than Carrollton

If you can find anything acceptable in Richardson or Plano schools, those would be good choices, too.

This 100%. We live on the bird streets and love the area, but the local public schools are lack luster. We will either be moving or sending our kids to private school when they are of age.

Echoing what a couple folks have said earlier, you should be able to find a home close to your budget + decent schools in Carrollton or Richardson. We are in West Richardson and I can get to Love Field with no traffic in 15-20 minutes (double that during rush hour).
