This is our first year with a pool in Dallas. I have two opposing opinions from the professionals.

One recommends to winterize the pool, the other said it isn't worth it.

Thoughts? Recommendations? Thanks

Don't winterize assuming your pool has freeze protection.

We never winterize ours. With 3 pumps the electric bill can be higher during the coldest months when they are running 24/7 for a week straight if we get a deep freeze. My dad always winterized his pool, and that worked for him, but he took care of all maintenance himself so I don't know if it makes sense to pay someone else to winterize and then turn it all back on in the spring. I don't think it matters that much either way.

Thanks so much for your replies!! That is my concern is the electric going through the roof. The company that suggested to winterize only charges $175 for turning everything off and back on. The pumps have been running all morning....

We have a timer with a thermostat on the pool pump, and I set it back to run only three or four hours during the night for winter. Of course it runs full-time when the temp hits freezing. I dip leaves daily in the fall until the neighbors' bradford pear trees are finally done. No need to add chlorine when the water temp is below 50. I just dosed it up good with shock and will pretty well let it take care of itself, just adding water now and again, or dropping in a chlorine tab when we have a warmer spell.

When we lived in the Wichita Falls area, we winterized. I'm liking it much better to not have to.

Most people in this area do not winterize. There are not that many below freezing nights to make it worth while. Make sure you have freeze protection. Set your timer back to just 4 hours and have it kick on at 2 AM to 6 AM (usually the coldest time). That way if it does dip below freezing at night, and your freeze protection kicks on, its running at the same time it would normally and your not doubling up.

This site was very helpful for me when I got my first pool.
