That statement led me to believe she was saying just what she said .. in 11th grade they were suddenly taking 3 AP courses AND getting extra time. Misunderstood, maybe, but I think she and her daughter need to be more concerned about themselves instead of what other students are doing/getting. Is the OP's daughter suffering bc the other students are getting extra time? Does she need extra time? -- Just my opinion.
Let's look at this statement: "My child was outraged that people all of a sudden in 11th grade were taking 3 AP courses and getting extra time in all of them FOR THE FIRST TIME in 10 years."

This statement could mean one of two things:
1. My child was outraged that people were taking AP courses for the first time in 10 years, and that they were getting extra time on these tests.
2. My child was outraged that these people were getting extra time for the first time in 10 years, and the context of this extra time is AP courses.

Both of these are as logically valid as the other, but they aren't equally sensible interpretations. Considering that first graders don't take AP courses, option #1, which is what you chose, doesn't make any sense. Clearly the frustration on the part of the OP was of variety number two.

Just wait till they start looking for a real job. Your interviewer will not care that they were a star athlete or took a huge number of ap classes. chances are they aren't hireable because they cant pass a background check.

Thank you for the clarification. I understand the point that the OP is trying to make, and yes, if those students were not given extra time before than it is a valid point of frustration. I still find it interesting that it is of this much concern to the OP and her daughter. If her daughter is doing just fine then why does she care - or is that she could benefit from the extra time as well, but is not getting it. How does she know that 50% of the students have extra time? Lots to leave to the imagination here, but yes - thank you for clarifying

I agree, particularly in the context of AP exams. Unlike things like class rank, other students at the same school doing well does not hurt the OP's child. AP exams have a set standard (such as 4 out of 5) that is needed in order to be awarded college credit. They are in no way curved or standardized against other students.

I think it's funny that she considered extra time to be a useful "tip", just as worthwhile as being a potential D-I swimmer or a Duke/Vandy/etc. legacy.

At best, it will boost their GPA a point or two. More likely, it'll get results such as EDS_ described. And kids who resort to iffy "cheat-to-win" angles like this are the type that don't bother doing (or doing well) those extra-curriculars that schools REALLY care about.
