Best Cities For Jobs In 2008

By Matthew Kirdahy, Forbes.com
Jan. 10, 2008

Austin, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio all rank high on the latest forecast data from Moody's Economy.com. McAllen, Texas, is expected to have the highest job growth rate, as its leisure and hospitality, educational and health services and commercial construction jobs flourish.
"While the economy is cooling, Texas continues to generate more jobs than the national average," said Krista Piferrer, deputy press secretary to Gov. Rick Perry. "Unemployment is low in Texas, thanks in large part to a favorable business climate that encourages businesses to expand or relocate to our state."
Even still, Salt Lake City, in all its tech-job abundance, looks like it will remain No. 1 since Forbes.com's most recent ranking.

I can't believe FW is booming in jobs...what jobs?? I've heard of no large corporate relocations or anything like that. I read the Dallas and FW business sections daily and 90% if the businesses that seem to be expanding in FW are always industrial in nature...that must be the jobs type of jobs FW mostly has to offer. Now San Antonio is another story. With the Toyata plant and scores of corporate campuses going up..that town is booming.

The article makes assumptions that really don't work...

"To compile the rankings for the Best Cities For Jobs list forecast, we used five data points, weighted equally: the state's unemployment rate, job growth, income growth, median household income and cost of living for full-year 2006 (only partial data is available so far for 2007). We measured the largest 100 metropolitan areas, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, and obtained the data from Moody's Economy.com."

Not really. SA isn't doing much more than the rest of the state (Houston, Austin, Fort Worth, Austin, and Dallas).

I don't think it does
the best thing that has happened to Dallas in a while is the Blackberry people coming to the Las Colinas/Grapevine area...

Over 75% of employers are small businesses which employ less than 10 people. It doesn't require a large employer to create employment, it could be an environment conducive to starting a business that spurs employment.

San Antonio is booming, and seems too have taken the lead for time being.

They've kindof burried all the data. You have to go to the Forbes site, find the article and look for the link to the table of data. Just did that so everyone could just like to it:
