Hello everyone, I have recently considered of moving to Dallas with my parents. I wonder how much the cost of living in Dallas and its suburbs compare to Miami. My salary is upward of $60k and the job is located in Plano. Should I look into housing in Dallas or Plano? I'd prefer somewhere that's close by and convenient (if possible for my parents) to commute around. I, personally, don't mind about driving 20-30' to work. Affordable and safe community are the priority. Thank you for your time and input.

I assume you are single and childless? Are you renting or purchasing? Budget?

What part of Plano (Legacy area?)?

Plano is very family-oriented and is known for their really good schools, and families are predominant so keep that in mind. You could live around the Shops at Legacy, though. A few of my single coworkers live there and there are a lot of great restaurants and bars there. What do you like to do in your free time?

How often will you be visiting your parents/vice versa?

I shopped around for apartments in Legacy. Someplace call Parkside at Legacy. $1500/month for 2bd/2bth. If I can find a single home to rent for $2k/month, I'm down. My parents are going to live with me. My job place is in Plano, close by Legacy. I live the vibe in Plano though. However, I don't mind living in Dallas as long as the rent is within $2k/month (2bd/2bth) and it's in a safe community. I also heard about Lebanon for affordable renting prices too.

Dallas rent in decent areas is more expensive than Plano. If you find Plano to be too expensive, look in McKinney, Allen, North Garland (Firewheel area) or Carrollton.

Look up realtor.com under "for rent", there should be some at your price. My house at Lebanon would be going for rent at $2k/mth in June.

You can find home rentals in the Little Elm area for under $2k which is a safe, good area, and close to your job.

Look into Austin Ranch area of The Colony, Richardson, Carrollton, North Dallas, East Plano or Frisco.

Can you pm me for more details? I'm looking to move in mid July.

So far, I've found some homes around Frisco within my budget, but they're obviously not gonna be available until mid July. Any opinion on Richardson?

You are correct. Whatever you are looking at today, will very likely not going to be available in July. Usually rental homes get listed about 30 days from when they are available or immediately they are listed.

Application fees can get costly as they range between $40 to $70 for every person over 18.

You should have a good variety to choose from within your budget. Basic rules are that you should make at least 3 X the monthly rent. i.e. if rent is 2K, monthly salary should be at least 6K. If you're relocating, you should have an offer letter from a local company or pay stubs.
