I'm picking up a friend from DFW airport on Wednesday. I'm coming from Arlington and will take 360N. I know there is a toll on the road that passes through the airport. Do I have to pay the toll getting to the airport and leaving the airport? Is there a tollbooth or is it all electronic? Is there any way to avoid the toll and use back roads?

Your friend can take the free shuttle to the car rental facility and you can pick her up there to avoid the $2 fee to drive thru the airport. That's a lot of trouble.

Otherwise, you will get a ticket at the toll booth when entering the airport and will pay based on time spent there when you submit your ticket to the toll taker at departure.

Yes you pay a toll when you leave and they do accept a NTTA Toll Pass. It costs about $2 if you stay somewhere under an hour.

It's not worth taking a back road and I believe it's not possible.

You'd have to be a pretty big cheapskate to make someone ride that bus 20 minutes to the car rental area to save 2$! Lol

Is there a reason why there's a toll to access the airport? It seems a little scummy to charge people for simply accessing the airport. I'd only expect that in states like NJ and NY!

I'm not sure, I was quite shocked the first time I picked someone up too! Lol

This has gone through many iterations over the last 30 years. I think in part it's a mechanism for reducing use of the airport road as a north/south commuter route. Note: according to the current price list at www.dfwairport.com, it's more for 0 - 8 minutes ($4) than it is for 8 - 30 minutes ($2). So don't be in too big a hurry!

It was free for many years. There are a lot of people who cut through the airport as a shortcut headed north or south. It's to collect a toll from the people who use as a shortcut.

Plus it's just extra income.

Ironically the toll tag is what killed the free 1 hour parking for pickup.

Who remembers $5 taxi rides for terminal transfers?
