I am looking to retire and relocate to Texas. I am looking for some good weather and good places to live my twilight years. I dont' want to be "in town" but on the out skirts of a nice town...(I dont' want to be off grid either!) I know DFW is to much for my income (fixed) and most of the surrounding towns also are out of my mortgage range. So..anyone have any suggestions where to look? i know property taxes are so high because there is no state income tax...but being retired..that doesn't matter to me. I still have to pay the high PT's..but don't get the off set of no state taxes being taken out of my pay check..that I don't have! My price range for a home is around $225. Places I have ruled out are Waco (not heard to much good about there) and Austin (can't afford it!) So...any suggestions?

Maybe Glenn Heights or Midlothian?

Why rule out WACO? You are 1.5 hours from DFW and 1.5 hours from Austin. It's a great area and accessible to many other parts of Texas to explore. The "Heart O' Texas" region is pretty nice. Especially west of Waco past the Lake and up in the hills. SW of Dallas is growing so even if you are on the outskirts now, you would be surrounded by encroaching suburbia within 10 years. DFW can't grow that far north without people starting to look south.

It happened to Houston! 20 years ago no one lived 6 miles south of downtown Houston and yet it spread out 20 miles to the north and west and southwest. Now the south side is growing like wildfire as people seek reasonable commutes into Houston. DFW is doing the same. grand Prairie, DeSoto, Mansfield, Arlington, things are marching south. Waco is a lot less likely to boom like that. It is growing but slower.

Definately things are growing! I just have not heard such great things about Waco. I had a real estate agent sending me homes and they just weren't much or over priced for me. was on a forum saying because of that prison that is there...it has brought some bad elements. Not saying anything bad...as I dont' konw for sure...but just didn't get a good feeling about the area. But that is why I am wanting on the outskirts of town...I only got a good 20 years left in me so...I am not to concerned about growth in that respect

You are right to be fearful of Waco. Lots of crime, lots of homeless, & drugs for such a minor city. Waco is nothing but an oversized truckstop between Dallas and Austin according to most Texans.

South and west - Waxahachie, Granbury, Weatherford, Aledo, Glen Rose, Cleburne....Would all be good places for a retiree. Draw a circle about 40 miles outside DFW and you are good. I would avoid due east around Lake Tawakoni, southeast of Dallas.

East TX - Tyler, Cedar Creek Lake, Athens, Longview (and more) and many areas east would be good.

You need to come spend 1-2 weeks here and drive exploring areas.
