It appears the rules have changed for how I can schedule a driver test for my child. A couple years ago, I just registered online on the DPS site and selected a test date and time. Now, this is what the DPS website states:

Welcome to the Texas DPS Drive Test Scheduling System.
Who can schedule a driving test online?
Applicants who have been registered in the Applus system by a driver license office employee. If you have not been registered, you must visit a driver license office in person for assistance and to make sure you are eligible.

Am I reading this correctly in that now I have to physically go into a driver license office in person for them to register me and then I can make an online appointment for my child to take the driver test?

My child has a permit, but to my knowledge, I haven't been registered in whatever this Applus system is.

Am I reading this right??

We went with a third party tester. It cost some money but it was worth it.
