Are there any good campgrounds around within say, a 6 to 8 hour drive? Something with good views (lake or mountains/hills, potentially), nice natural setting, and relatively safe. Thanks.

There are tons! Look into Caddo Lake State Park and Enchanted Rock. There are many campgrounds in the Austin/San Antonio area, and you can even make it out to Big Bend in about 8 hours.

Check out Broken Bow Lake Oklahoma. The area has Hills, a pretty lake and camping from 100% roughing it to beautiful cabins and homes.

I was going to suggest this area as well. Beavers Bend State Park is really nice with several good outdoor activities as well.

Thanks for the suggestions, sounds nice. Can you rent fishing boats or go fishing at those places? Hiking, bike riding? Just curious about the recreational opportunities.

Also is it safe for small dogs? ~20-30lbs.

I know there is fishing in the Broken Bow Lake, as well as the streams and rivers in that area. Not sure what kind of boat rentals are available though. There are several hiking and biking trails. I have taken my two small dogs a few times without any issues at all.

I would suggest Degray Lake State Park in Arkansas. It is beautiful. Unfortunately, it looks like they are closed right now due to flooding. Keep it in your list for future trips!

Texas has some great State Parks less than 5 hours from DFW. As a starter try Tyler State Park. Great for the family with canoes, kayaks, fishing, swimming.

You've got tons of options within 6 hours and even more within 8. The ones mentioned so far are great. The complaint about DFW lacking outdoor recreation is usually based on wanting something within 1.5-2 hours (although those can be found as well). With a 6-8 hours range, try the Ozarks, or something near Hot Springs/Lake Catherine area of Arkansas.
