One way or the other, football is always sucking attention away from academics in our school districts.

The link is only about whether it will open on time due to cracks. It apparently will be OK for use, not anything like the Allen Stadium.

Nothing in the article about athletics vs. academics.

In general, I agree with the conclusion. The best thing about sports is that they have the potential to curb the obesity crisis. But the way in which sports has had a role within education is not serving the youth population well.

PE should be a larger part of the curriculum. For the ordinary student, it seems like sports has shifted to an external focus. A youth is either part of a sport like football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, track & field, etc. outside of school or not at all. We need healthier bodies at all ages, and youth would be a great place to start.

Well, district administration's time was tied up with planning, contracts and construction, now with investigations, negotiations, repairs and so on. Anyone who ever built a $200,000 house and had construction issues, knows how much hassle it creates, this is what $65 million project or something like that? This report is just first of the three preliminary report so no way to be sure if this is the end of it, it only predicted this being "less of a nightmare".

Physical education and intramural sports are almost non existent in high schools and less than 20% are on teams, we need to serve 100% students. Their physical fitness shouldn't be tied to be able to make team.

Why is it the school's responsibility? Parents should make sure their children are active and healthy. My kids swim, ride bikes, golf, boogie board, etc.

OTOH, one of the things I appreciate about schools here vs. NC is the variety of ways students can fulfill the PE requirement and not just by being on a team or by taking "traditional P.E." Dance, weight training, outdoor education, etc. are all great options and can meet a person's needs as he/she grows into adulthood.

Well, its not an issue to help parents or students who take responsibility. Its for ones who doesn't. For example, every child needs good nutrition and we have to focus on nutrition education and quality of lunches served at schools, instead of leaving all responsibility on parents and children. In future their obesity related conditions will weigh down health care system for all.

Why do we have truency laws, if parents or children don't care, let youth stay uneducated? No, unless we want to deal with unemployment, crime and other issues, as a society, we just can't afford to absolve ourselves of all responsibilities as consequences have collective effect.

As far as sports go, imho spending resources on a sport benefiting less than 10% of student body is a questionable decision.
