This week is forcasted to be VERY hot with days of triple digit heat. This is kind of heat is way ahead of schedule and is said to be a true Texas Heat Wave (we’re going to see August-type heat in late May/early June). I know many are new to North Texas and probably are not use to intenase heat. With Memorial Day being tomorrow, I know a lot of you will probably be enjoying the outdoors. Please stay hydrated and wear loose light colored clothes! As the temps warm up, your level of activity needs to go down! (Stay indoors if you cannot take the heat!)

Y’all have a blessed Memorial Day!

Dallaz

100s in Late May and Early June?! Yeah that is definitely not normal in Texas. People will use this against Texas in other forums but they have to realize that this is probably once every decade if that. I don't remember a time where it got that hot in Texas growing up there from 87-05. You had your 90 degree days in May. But it would cool down to the 80s quick. 100 though, didn't see that until July at the most.

This could be the start of one of those record extremely hot 100+ summer days like we saw back in 1980, 1997 and 2011.

Let's hope not. We don't need to set any records.

Often point out that Dallas and Houston are actually worse than Las Vegas - For instance over next weekend you are going to hit heat index well into the 120s. That simply does not happen in LV. We will be hotter than Dallas much of the summer but the heat index will virtually always be lower.

I moved here in 2011 during the last bad hot summer. I did not enjoy 2011.

This month of May has been unpleasantly hot. I lived in Phoenix prior to Dallas and May is one of the biggest differences between Phoenix and Dallas. In Phoenix, May is always unpleasant. In Dallas, May is usually pleasant, and this year has been an exception.

If you aren't used to Texas summers make sure you are careful because unlike some places it often won't cool down in the evening.

I just looked at the National Weather Service page. They predict nothing close to heat indexes over 120 in Dallas next weekend.

IIRC the all time high heat index in Dallas was 118.

Absolute nonsense, considering Dallas and Houston have never had 120+ heat indices.

It's important to realize the differences between this impending heatwave, and the heatwaves that occured in years like 2011. In those previous years, the dryness was from frequent EML capping during spring followed by subtropical ridge persistence in summer. But this time, the heatwave is from the subtropical ridge actually arriving early. This is actually good news for later in summer, because the subtropical ridge migrates poleward in summer, and it's early schedule manifestation in Texas suggests a farther north displacement this year. With the subtropical ridge far north enough, Texas starts to fall under influence of rain-bearing tropical easterlies. These tropical rains would be more prominent in southern/coastal Texas, but even North Texas can get in on the action if the ridge ends up far enough north.

In other words, this heat is just preparation for the epic monsoon season that's about to come to Texas. July and August could even end up cooler than May this year.
