I've been to most MLB parks, and plan to make it to new Globe Life this year or next. But wondering if it will really help attendance. Arizona has a roof, and has been a weak draw for years, and Houston's attendance was low for its market size until they started going to World Series. Do you think new Globe Life will have a major impact on attendance?

It really depends on what you mean. By official attendance statistics which basically is 'season passes sold', the Rangers are generally one of the top teams in the AL and occasionally among the top in all of MLB, so their attendance is already well above average. Also, the new park will have less seats, so it is possible that by the 'season passes sold' stat will fall, and the Rangers will no longer be an outlier but rather coast towards average.

If you mean 'butts in the seats in August', then the new park might have some impact on attendance, but honestly probably not that much, hence the business decision to install a smaller number of seats.

Maybe at first because people will want to see the new park. If they are losing attendance may drop regardless of a roof

Dunno if it'll help attendance, but it will surely improve the gameday experience. The heat and humidity make Rangers games pretty damn miserable for most of the season.

No I don’t think so. On top of that it’s a total waste because the current one is loved and not very old. The new one looks terrible and so does the crap around it.

Winning puts butts in seats. There's two retractable roof stadiums in the top 15 in attendance and those are in Houston and Milwaukee, 2 playoff teams. The lowest attended stadiums in the league are the only remaining dome and a retractable roof stadium. The Rangers have seen their best attendance in years when they were winning. They may seem some incremental changes, especially with summer day games, but a lot of that could be offset by the on field product.

I was disappointed with the new ballpark happening so soon, but I won't complain too much since I still keep my door-to-door driving time to below 30 minutes. I like watching baseball outdoors and, while I know I'll enjoy those summer games more in the a/c, there will inevitably be beautiful days when the roof is closed. I went to a weeknight game last spring where the game time temperature was around 70 degrees, but the pre-game threat of rain would have certainly kept the roof from being open.

What? After just tearing down Turnpike Stadium a few years ago, they're already wanting to replace the new one?

Bunch of idiots.

All 3 things should increase

1. Average attendenace

2. Revenue since each ticket will rise 10-20% in price + the right fee for each season ticket holder will increase

3. There's going to be more suites in the new stadium and the price is gonna be signficantly higher per suite

Even if attendance did theoritically stay the same, the higher ticket prices and increase in the total number of suites are both huge money increases (especially spread over a 30+ year span).

Good post.

Building the TBPiA without a roof and AC was just woefully stupid. Who knows the free agents, especially pitchers, have passed and how many trades have been nixed due to the heat.
