Hello,
I am a 33 year old African American female considering a move to Dallas Tx from Milwaukee, WI. I am wondering if this is a good idea. I am looking for a relatively progressive clean and safe community with relatively good nightlife and cultural activities. I am trying to avoid poverty stricken neighborhoods where people hang out, drink and/or do drugs all day.

I recently went the other way...Dallas to Milwaukee. Smartest decision I've ever made.

You might like the Addison Circle area. I've heard wonderful things from some of co-workers recently that are single and females. They felt this was a fairly decent area near the hot spots or within driving distance, but safe. Some are moving from the Uptown area to Addison Circle because they feel there is a real difference.

I moved back to Texas from Milwaukee and have been uberhappy. The summers here are like winters there, but with heatstroke instead of frostbike and you can go outside without spending 5 minutes getting dressed first.

One of my friends moved down here for school from Madison and has since moved back. She didn't feel she fit it because everyone was so 'superficial'. The guys I know who moved from various places in WI all seemed fine with it, but then guys don't normally talk about that kinda stuff.

So, I'd say it really depends. It's a pretty big culture shift and the heat can be difficult to get used to.

One thing to watch out for though, the 'bad' neighborhoods aren't as clearly delineated in Dallas as they are in Milwaukee. People here can give you a feel for certain areas, but check with the local police before settling on a spot. Start with a short term lease, then visit places yourself to see if you like it.

Oh, and there's one Culvers in North Texas and they burn the cheese curds. This is also the only place you'll find cheese curds.
