Trying to find an 1bd apartment in Plano with a garage (attached or detached is fine) in the 1000-1200/month range. There are many many options, almost to the point of being overwhelming. However, the reviews are all over the place - from "this place is a rat infested hell hole" to "amazing place to live"

My two major concerns with apartments is 1) bugs/roaches/rats etc. 2) Excessive noise

What is the best way to determine this when looking for a new apartment? I have a few days in Dallas middle of next month and want to sign a lease on an apartment so I will be settled in when I make my final move.

Is there any preferred website for apartment hunting in this area?

Read the reviews. Live on the top floor — much less noisy on the top floor — and try not to have windows facing the pool or parking lot.

Thanks, I am trying to do that - mixed reviews everywhere but narrowed a few down.

What are the typical electricity (min/max), water, trash costs in the area for a small 1 bd apt?

Also, is there any difference between West Plano and Central Plano (I don't have any kids so school districts are irrelevant)

You might consider using an apartment locator to help you narrow them down. Their service is free to you, and they are paid by the apartment complexes.

Central Plano is older, so the apartments will generally be older. Beyond that, it's all about your commute.
I rented many years ago in north west Plano and south west Plano and others in north Richardson (just south of Plano) , and the apartments were all super quiet. Even the ones around UTD. They are mostly not filled with young partying kids, they are filled with working people.

I reached out to several apartments, not even one has responded. Frustrating!

I am concerned about noise and bugs. How prevalent are bugs in apartments?

Do you have any recommendations about apartments in west Plano that meet those criteria? I am also not sure why nobody is responding to my inquiries. I am calling them and all I get is a voicemail. This has happened with multiple properties.

Maybe due to Covid19? Not sure.

I had an ant infestation in a so-so apartment in north Dallas once, they took care of it that day. Other that that, I don't recall seeing any bugs inside. I think to see roaches and things like that, you have to go to the shabbier apartments on the east side of Plano or farther down into Dallas.
