Our society has now gotten so lazy that people refuse to walk to the corner store or their neighbor's house?

This is exactly like the Wall-E movie where it shows fat people who rely on vehicles to move every step of the way.

Every neighborhood now seems overrun with them.

They aren’t legal to drive on Texas streets.

If you look up ”Neighborhood Electric Vehicle” you should find that they can be registered and driven (subject to local laws). An ”NEV” is different from a ”Golf Cart” based on some safety equipment (like lights, seat belts etc) and having a VIN. ”Golf carts” are legal in more restrictive circumstances than a ”NEV", such as only to go to golf courses or in gated communities.

Lot's of exceptions and perturbations but golf carts, gas and electric/battery, are good to go across many roads in TX in which the speed limit is 35mph or less. Newer TX law(s?)make most ATVs good to go as well.

My neighborhood has a lot of them and it is very common to see kids that are clearly younger than 16 driving them in the neighborhood, which is illegal because they don't have a valid license. I'm surprised someone hasn't gotten hurt or killed.

Good. Golf carts are perfectly safe for children to drive, they are slower than bikes at a max of about 12 mph and generally more useful in Texas weather, and they are smaller so they take less space than cars.

Instead of pushing for bike lanes, municipalities should be pushing for golf cart lanes. I've heard Lake Highlands has some, but I've personally never seen any driving around my area.

I was just wondering about this the other day. Seems to be a relatively recent phenomenon (at least where we are at). There was one family we knew that had one for years and they would take it around the neighborhood for fun, decorate it for special events, etc. Over the last year or so though, I have seen a number of them around the neighborhood.

I don't really get it, as we aren't in a golf course community or anything.

Nothing to do with laziness. It's already common for people to choose to drive cars than walk to the corner. Having one gives another reason for people to be out and about so I think it's a good thing. It's another version of motorized bike or something similar.

We have one and so do our neighbors. My teenager and neighborhood kids drive it around in the neighborhood.

I live in a golf course community and many diehard golfers have their own carts that they drive to the course on. Other than the neighborhood streets, I have never seen them on big streets.

A DL is not needed to drive a golf cart. It's goofy but by definition GCs are not legal motor vehicles.

ETA - Now I'm reading a DL is required. This is after the sheriff telling our lake community saying a DL isn't required. I need to investigate more.

ETA II -

https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov...21/kp-0364.pdf

It seems the AG's office believes because the legislature didn't specifically allow no-DL driving of GCs on public roads through changes of law recently DLs are required via implication. Someone will challenge that in court soon I'd bet.

Also I see where the sheriff above was coming from the areas he was talking about is covered via CC&Rs.
