I have an 8 hour layover at DFW and looking for an area just to kill time. Good coffee shops and lunch places are the only criteria as all I am looking to do is work remotely until my connecting flight.

I have been advised about Grapevine and Las Colinas as spots to go to. Is one got more going than the other or is there other neighborhoods I can also reach with TexRail where I could get a good small downtown experience and still be not too far from the airport?

I wouldn't call Las Colinas a small downtown experience exactly - it has decent-size office buildings and big apartment complexes as part of a semi-walkable modern suburban mixed-use development. You would use DART to reach it, not TexRail.

My gut feeling is that Grapevine is your best bet, though more than 2-3 hours might be a bit too long (and that only assuming you're getting a meal and drinks or spending time in a museum). It's very very close to the airport, so Uber may be pretty cheap in addition to the rail.

Grapevine.

I used to live in Las Colinas. Its a pretty place, but quite boring.
Just restaurants, office towers, apartments and corporations.

Interesting so the fact that they have a RiverWalk isn't much. Its not like they succeeded with it like OKC did with BrickTown when they were trying to be a little like San Antonio?

Not at all.

Its just a lake surrounded by office towers and some restaurants. Most of those restaurants cater to the business crowd.

Exxon, the BIGXII Conference, and Verizon are some of the big companies that are either headquartered there, or have a major presence.

There is not much nightlife, and the culture of Las Colinas is straight from Office Space.....CORPORATE.

I will give Las Colinas props for being an attractive part of town.

Thanks to all that commented here. I ended up spending the time in Grapevine and it ended up being a great choice.

I took the TX Rail from terminal B and fare was only $1. From there walked to REefined coffee and for $4 got the bottomless coffee. It was awesome, the waitress would prepare me a new cup as soon as I approached the counter. That is class A service right there.

After lunchtime I checked out the Harvest Hall near the train station. Its a decent place to work as well.
