They just have to be very good at something. It doesn't even have to be something that they studied in school. A kid can choose a major in a field that tends to lead to higher income......but they still have to be very good at it. It is easier to be good at something they are passionate about, as opposed to something they dislike/resent.

They are lucky enough to have plenty of options. What other people think should not be a factor. A comfortable income is possible in just about any field, if you are very good at what you do.

I don't expect my children to equal my earnings without a good measure of luck, and help. One is 19 in college with a current Economics major declared and doesn't know what he wants to do with his life, the other is 16 and is constantly glued to her phone or iPad. On the outside chance she became an influencer of note she could make significantly more than me but odds are against it.

My son will most likely work for me someday as a property manager and eventually we'll pass our portfolio over to him and our daughter. Hopefully we have ingrained enough sense in them that they won't turn around and sell everything and instead have a steady rental income after we're gone.

I want them to do what makes them happy... but at the same time, they need to have an eye towards doing something that is financially viable long term.

Business is pretty diverse these days. Looking like a good option vs. medicine and engineering.

The vast majority of kids who start out in medicine or engineering change their major after the first year. You have to be a very dedicated student to excel in these fields. I told my son he could pick any major he wanted as long as he could explain to me what he was going to do with it. He majored in digital media and is currently working in his field. He is a productive citizen and he takes care of himself. Am happy that he is happy.
