The trend in the North Texas McMansion-sphere, is to have wrought iron fencing for the backyard instead of wood fencing. I'm noticing this on the small lotsize McMansions and the large lot size McMansions. Yes it gives the neighborhood a clean feel provided everyone keeps their backyard immaculate. But the lack of privacy is baffling. If I can't tan my birthday suit in the backyard of my 2million dollar home, why did I even buy it?

Does anyone have any insight I may be missing as to the surge in popularity of these?

My next door Police guy uses this and we all followed suit, you may need to stock up on some zip ties as some windy days may break them ties.

Unless your HOA objects - put up your fence or go to a tanning salon. There is always spray tan which does not cause melonoma later on.

I know what you are talking about - it's pretty common in Parker for example. I wouldn't spent $200k on one of those houses. The lot planning is absolutely terrible.

IMO the thought behind it is wrought-iron fencing is better quality, looks better longer, and less maintenance than the wood fences, but they don't want to spend the cash to go full cement block walls on every house like they do out west. IMO the privacy issue kills all its plusses.

I think the OP is referring to lack of privacy more so than tanning in his/her birthday suit.

I know you know this but there's little chance any of that is legit welded wrought iron. Some of it is likely slope adjustable aluminum alloy and some fixed aluminum alloy segmented fence.

Having recently paid for some of the later it's being installed in these areas because local rules allow and it's cheaper to much cheaper all in than wood privacy fencing in part because of greatly decreased wind load issues posts are set in shallow and small bore holes dug by a guy with a portable gas drill.

We just had, like six weeks ago, 326' + 5 gates of the fixed stuff installed by 2 otherwise retired guys with a 3rd helping some of the time in one long day. Given slope and other issues it would have taken them bare minimum four or five days to have installed a wood privacy fence. In our case the contractor's price for an 8' wood fence was more than double metal and the relevant HOA likely wouldn't have allowed a privacy fence anyway.

Golf courses, parks, vacant lake land, ect. Usually anything with a view. Iron fences keep the view open and you don't block your neighbors view. A more spacious feel.
