The sprawling shopping center, located on the northwest corner of Illinois Avenue near and Zang Boulevard and west of Interstate 35, has been a destination for Oak Cliff residents since it was built in 1949.

The addition of Target will help attract new tenants to the shopping center, which is 88.6% leased, said Brett Milke, vice president of redevelopment for Brixmor. “We want it to become a true center of the community like Wynnewood was in the 1950s.”

The center’s iconic monument sign will remain as a focal point, Brixmor said. The developer is also planning new public gathering spaces, new signs and an enhanced entrance that the company said “will create a sense of arrival at the primary entrances and provide wayfinding throughout the 65-acre center.” Brixmor plans to begin that work in the fall.

The Target store will be 111,000 square feet, according to the retailer’s website, and will add another grocery option for area residents. Target has been expanding its private-label foods and its overall grocery business over the past few years.

Renderings of New Target and Wynnewood Village Renovation

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dSp68K...ature=youtu.be

According to this recent article about the new Target and Wynnewood reno — In 2018, citing research indicating $781 million in unmet consumer demand in North Oak Cliff.

Some History about Wynnewood Village

Built in the late 1940s, Wynnewood offered shopping, banking, entertainment, doctors and dining. There was a drycleaner, a lamp store, a photography studio and insurance offices. Out-of-town guests could lodge in the two-story Wynnewood Hotel (where the Chase Bank drive-ins are now), and convenience items were available at the new 7-Eleven. Wynnewood residents could get their shoes repaired, their cars serviced and filled with gas. They shopped at major department stores, and attend church — all within walking distance, as numerous housing options surrounded the central shopping space.

Wynnewood Village offered everything a “village” was designed to do. There was little need to venture outside its boundaries. It is unique that it is laid out like a "village". Shops are not crammed into one huge air-conditioned complex, but are housed in blocks of one-story buildings with uniform design surrounded by live oak trees. It was innovative for its time.

By 1970, Wynnewood Village had over 104 stores spread out over 59 acres with 6,400 parking spaces, making it the largest open-air shopping center in Dallas. The decline of the center started, though, in 1975 as major tenants moved to the newly-opened Red Bird Mall only five miles away.

Major Department Stores included - Montgomery Ward (2 story store in the middle of the shopping center, later demolished in the 90s), Dallas-based Titche-Goettinger (Titche’s - was a 2 story store. The space is now divided and it is where Ross is located and where Fallas Parades once was) , and Dallas-based Volk’s. Titche’s ended up moving to Red Bird Mall and eventually became Dillard’s.

*Youtube links show the anchor stores during their Grand Opening. Titche’s originally opened as The Fair of Texas Dept Store but was immediately bought out and rebranded as Titche’s within a year as Titche’s raced to open suburban stores. One of them being at NorthPark too, which is also now a Dillard’s. Both links include interior and exterior shots*

Moved to Oak Cliff in 1968 my parents opened their first checking account at Wynnewood bank and they were loyal customers until the bank closed in 1988. My first job was at the Polar Bear Ice Cream located on Illinois ave. It's been 35 years since I last visited Wynnewood but I do have fond memories of it as a child. I would be happy to shop at that Target for old times sake.
