Ok. I’ve never planned a trip with a long layover.

We are willing to pay a good amount more to fly out of COS instead of DIA. There's really no comparison between the two assuming flight times, destinations, etc. work out of the smaller airport. Even the airport staff seem friendlier and less stressed.
COS is a winner for sure.

I think DIA is gorgeous but when busy it's pretty awful.

We've flown to DEN only twice I think, and the only thing I remember is crowds and really bad rental car experience.

At COS the parking lot is right outside and you get to the rental in no time. Now, I did have a really time consuming "defrosting" event there once.

OMG I forgot about the car rental angle at DIA..........not good. Get on a bus, leave the airport, get out in the cold and wait some more.

I'm dating myself but I used to fly into COS for business in Denver over flying into Stapleton. Outside some hot landings due to wind it's one of my favorite airports. Depending upon the roads it can be sneaky easy to take 24 and 9 or just 24 to Breck, Vail, Beaver etc. while avoiding Denver and the I70 beatdown. Although as we've gotten older and the wife insists on Eagle.......I don't really mind.

While the tight conditions (regarding busy crowds) and long distances (when changing terminals) at DFW can be irritating, I also find the rental car situation to be burdensome as well. While offsite centralized rental facilities aren't that unusual anymore (even OKC has them), I found DFW's to take just forever. It's one reason I've become more inclined to drive from Houston than fly, if I would have to go through DFW and rent a car.

Obviously in a DFW forum you wouldn't expect most posters to have that perspective, since it's not something locals would have to do. Same with IAH for me, I have no idea what that car rental experience (also offsite and centralized) is like either.

I think your points are legit. Renting a car at DFW is a pain. I've only done so 2x over recent years and it took a long time both times........same at most airpots of any size. IMO renting cars at DIA is worse than DFW tho.

I haven't gone through DIA since 2007, so I can't comment on what renting there is like now, but if it's more frustratingly slow than DFW, then...ouch.

Of course, I fly mainly to smaller airports anymore as my final destination, so my perceptions are somewhat skewed by the ease of travel at those places.

The rental car buses at DFW are super slow and infrequent to me but I like the consolidated facility. I feel like this has become a standard at most airports now and it makes more sense to setup this way. DIA is not that bad as long as your rental car bus comes in a timely manner. Lines at the booth are a different thing depending on what company you use (enterprise/national/alamo is usually super quick). Depending on time of year O/D at Denver isnt that high since it is a connecting airport. It is like getting off at ATL which is the busiet airport in the world but curbside wouldnt tell you that.

DFW needs to build a train to the rental car facility like Atlanta did.
