We'll be purchasing a new ceiling fan for the great room and ceiling is 10' high. I've never changed a fan out and the new one is supposed to be quite heavy and I think the entire project is likely over my head, no pun intended.

Any good recs on a trustworthy good priced electrician or just general handyman? I'm in the Carrollton area if it matters. Also, anyone have any idea on what to expect to pay?

I recently used this guy for a shorted out circuit on the front of our house. It was $95 bucks for the visit and repair. He basically said that most things that can be done in less than 1 hour would be that price plus any supplies I guess. I think a fan could be done in less than an hour. I found him off the BBB website. Nice guy.

hanging a fan is not difficult....unless you're a midget.

If you have a ladder, and are in decent physical condition, or know a guy who is (sorry to seem sexist, but you'd most likely need a guy for DIY fan installation) you can hang it yourself. Dont' worry about it being heavy, because you attach the base plate to the ceiling blocking, and the fan itself has a hook on it, so that you can hang it while you twist wires together then cap them. The fan comes with instruction if it came out of a box. Turn off the breaker first. Believe in yourself.
