I have been comparing cities with how many listed job openings they have and Dallas has just been blowing other places away.

Quick example.

I did a search for accounts manager, or clerical and administrative, and here were the results of jobs posted in the last 3 days.

Milwaukee, WI------180-------------jobs
Raleigh, NC-------784
Seattle, WA----2.343
Denver, CO-----1,640
Portland, OR----1,023
Miami, FL---------1,386
Houston, TX------3,044
San Antonio, TX------1,020
Dallas, TX-----2,689

Dallas and Houston seem to crush all of the other areas we are looking to move too. Is the job market really this healthy in Texas or am I not seeing something?

Thanks!

Not that this means anything, but I lost my job in LA only to be rehired in Dallas. I know quite a few people who have left LA for Dallas in the last year because of jobs and opprotunities.

Keep in mind 2 things:

1) The proportion between the number of postings and the number of people in the workforce

2) The unemployment rate. It was 7.4% in May here. If you assume there are only 3.25 million workers in DFW (half the total population), you have 240,000 people out of work who will be directly competing with you.

People foolishly believe that since Texas weathered the economic meltdown better than every place else, we're awash in a sea of jobs. That's NOT true. There may be more postings but I wouldn't pack up and move here without a job or you may find yourself flat broke and looking for work in a strange place.

The unemployment rate in the Metroplex is wayyy below the national average. Dallas is doing very well comparatively. Only one or two major cities have lower unemployment rates.

Regardless, one should NOT move here sight-unseen hoping to land a job. Get a job, THEN relocate. I know well-qualified people in DFW who have been out of work for a year or more.

That's not true. It is extremely difficult to land a job remotely, because employers already have plenty of people to choose from who already live here.

But if you're not a new UT grad, good luck getting a job at an income that can support an Austin lifestyle!
