We are likely going to be moving from Washington State to Texas in 2011 and while Houston will be a very possible destination we are looking at both Austin and Dallas as well. Aside from the fact that Dallas winters are a bit cooler than Austin, is there a noticeable difference between the two cities in the summer (in terms of weather)? Also, how much more affordable is Dallas compared to Austin (housing, taxes, etc)?

Thanks

Dallas is usually a few degrees cooler in summer but when it's 100F a few degrees does not mean much.

The Dallas area is more affordable than Austin, I feel.

Thanks for the reply. Is the humidity in Dallas and Austin similar?

Dallas is a far superior city. The weather is noticeably better IMHO.

Far superior in what way? I am coming from Vancouver, WA, which has a population of less than 200k so I'm really more of a suburb type person.

Oh I see. Well I guess it depends on personal preferences then.
Maybe you could try Highland Village and Flower Mound area? It is near Lewisville and the lake which has everything you need all in one area. Cedar Hill is a suburb that has hills, lake, and small town feel on the far south side of Dallas.

I think the south area of Austin is more favorable. There are some hills in that area. It is much slower. More country hick.

to answer the poster's question without the typical hijacking of the thread into a referendum:

the humidity is comparable in each city. In the summer it is humid in the morning, then it tends to burn off around noon. Click on the links below, and scroll down about 2/5 of the way, and there will be charts and graphs showing this info:

//www.city-data.com/city/Austin-Texas.html
//www.city-data.com/city/Dallas-Texas.html

scroll about 1/5 of the way down to see the housing prices of each.
Dallas is more consistant in regards to price per/sf with less correlation to distance from downtown because it has an extensive highway system that makes exurbia commuting less of a factor than other major cities, and the job base is more dispersed. Austin tends to be expensive in only two areas: hill country, and central Austin. Everything else is comparable to Dallas.

DFW native relocated to the Pac NW here. If you want the area in TX that is most reminescent of the Pac NW, you will want to look at the west side of Austin as you get into the "Texas Hill Country." It's not identical, of course, but it will be a lot more familiar to you than the geography of DFW or Houston.
