I'm looking for somebody, anybody, who can make my husband a dominican cake. He misses this more than anything since moving from NYC. I can make everything from mofongo to pernil and everything in between, but I am nobody's baker. Help me please.

That can't be true. I can buy a killer Red Velvet cake at a cafeteria downtown. It's a southern staple.

I'd never heard of one so, of course, had to google. It sounds very complex and even many of the natives have it professionally done for their celebrations. The pictures and descriptions sound wonderful.....I'm sure he'd love to have one. It's sweet of you to seek one out for your hubby.......hope you find what you're looking for.

Moderator cut: orphaned quote

Nope I know what a good Red Velvet cake taste like. My grandmother made a many while I was growing up. The lady that makes them downtown is around 70 years old and can cook with the best of them. A Red Velvet Cake is not that difficult to bake. I don't consider myself a baker but I have made many of them from scratch.

Isn't it just a cake with a ton of red food coloring and cream cheese frosting? What else goes into it?

Personally, I don't like Red Velvet Cake, but I did bake one for my daughter's birthday per her request. I had never made one before and got the recipe from Southern Living. It called for cream cheese frosting (gag!) and one poster on the boards said that cream cheese frosting is yucky (I agree). Is that how you prefer your cake? I'm just wondering. The cake itself was mediocre even for a Southern Living recipe, but the cc frosting was disgusting.
