We should make it a law that English proficiency is required before you can get a driver's license.

Is the written test to get a driver's license in English only? Or is it available in Spanish, Vietnamese or any other language?

Obviously directional sign don't require a specific language if you know what their legal meaning is, however, how can you be a safe driver if you can't read a sign written in English.

My question is this: if that English requirement is only for long-haul truckers, et al, then why did it appear in the MDT dropdown for people with regular class C license?

* the software seems to need correction
* perhaps the LEOs thought they were adding an informational line to the ticket rather than an offense. Dunno, but that makes more sense than a LEO ticketing someone for that intentionally.

Totally agree. I was just recently in a collision - which was not my fault - with someone who could not speak ANY english! Getting insurance information and exchanging names and addresses became almost impossible. Totally compounded an already stressful situation to one of utter frustration. Don't mind immigrants. Everyone except Native Americans are products of immigration. But now that English is set as the national language DRIVERS SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO SPEAK MINIMAL ENGLISH in order to drive!!!!

Playing devil's advocate here. Many people I know are worldwide travelers and rent cars in foreign countries where English is not the language. I have friends who've driven all over the Italian countryside, for example. Do we really want to go down the road (ha ha) where one must be able to speak to speak the language of any country where one wants to drive? Pretty limiting, if you ask me.
When was English "set" as the national language?

Oh, and for the record. I won't drive in any foreign country, whether they speak English or not, because the thought makes me too nervous!

Excellent point! I've driven in many European countries without knowing the various languages (except in Spain). Somehow I managed to drive safely and get where I needed to go. Had I been required to speak French, German, Italian, Czech or whatever, then I would have had to drastically change my plans. The two countries that I have been to that I refuse to drive in are England (because they drive on the other side of the road and the other side of the car) and Mexico (because of corrupt police).
