At what age does a child start grade one in Texas? My son turned 5 in January, 2010; would he start grade one in September 2010 or September 2011? Thanks.

Ben

Hi Ben, from what I understand, your son should start kindergarten this year, in August.

yes, kindergarten this year, 1st grade in august, 2011.

but kindergarten is the first grade children attend. so 1st grade is actually their second year of school.

Ben,

The schools in this area have a cut-off date of September 1. That means, your child must turn 5 on or before that date to start kindergarten in the fall. With a January birthday, your son will start school this year.

Hope that helps!

state law has Sept 1 as legal day a child must be 5 to being kindergarten--if child is not 5 by then must wait for next year
some private schools/day cares are less stringent for day care classes but since Kindergarten is state curriculum class, think all private/day care schools abide by that cut-off date...
