Heck when I grew up in Brock TX, we all feared the paddle that hung in the hall way window by the office.
I for one am not a screwed up person because my parents and my schools choice of punishment was a good old fashion whoop'n.

Now I know people are going to be posting beating a child is wrong, and yes I agree BEATING a person any person is wrong. But a swift whoop in the rearend sometimes does justice.

So please back off on the beating the child comments, that is not what I am agreeing with here.

It's good to see that parental consent is required in these cases. I feel all punishment should be a decision made by the parents, not by strangers who have their own personal beliefs of right or wrong. If parents decline the spanking option, they still can work with the school to mete punishment out at home.

It would be even better if the parents would work in tandem with the school's administration and teachers and not take the "blameless child" stance (as so frequently is the case). Kids should never be in the position where the can play one side against the other. Just as the article suggests that spanking diminishes respect for teachers, respect for their teachers will also diminish if they are given the power to manipulate them. Why respect the teacher when your parents don't?

If the parents can't discipline and would rather blame the teacher than fault their own disobedient children, then it's no wonder that these kids are uncontrollable in the classroom.
