We are getting ready to move to DFW and are wondering if anyone knows if there is public hunting land around the area or WMA's?? or if we need to start looking now for a hunting lease so we'll have some land to hunt come next hunting season. Would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks!!

No WMAs in Texas, and very little hunting on Parks & Wildlife land. You will most likely need to get a lease. if you are a retired or disabled military veteran, you can put in for the huting lottery at Fort Hood.

You can hunt wild hogs around Lake Grapevine with archery equipment only. It requires a permit but you just go to the corps office and ask for one. Any quality hunting is going to require a lease or you knowing someone who owns some land. Free hunting is really a crapshoot. Wild hogs are a nusiance and I love hunting for them. I will not pay someone $500 to hunt them.

The state is starting new program that will help landowners capture the rising tide of wild hogs in the state--something like 2 MM wild hogs--more than population of Dallas and FTW together from what I remember on recent news cast

You might post a WANTED on Craig's List and see if you get any takers...

Clarksville is about 2.5 hrs from Dallas

this is old post on forum about bow hunting--several posts down there is info about available land to bow hunt in DFW area/East Texas that might be good to followup with...there might be more current posts with same info--or you could join and post your question there where people who are active in that sport might be more readily available

The problem with hogs is they breed like rabbits and most private land owners want you to either pay to hunt them. The supply of hogs for outweigh the demand (people willing to pay to hunt them). I can understand a private land owner not wanting to give folks free access to hunt. But they need to be eradicating them if they want let other folks do it. There populations are spreading like wildfire and they need to be dealt with now not later.
