In the next week or so, I will likely be traveling from Raleigh, NC to Dayton to purchase a used vehicle and would like to know if someone could recommend a competent, thorough, honest mechanic to do a pre-purchase inspection. Also, I know Dayton gets far more winter weather than Raleigh does, but I'm wondering if corrosion, rust, and salt damage are a concern when buying a vehicle that has been pre-owned in the Dayton area. Thanks for any help you can provide this southerner.

Is it a collector type automobile? If so, there are any number of clubs in the area that you can contact via the Internet that are devoted to whatever make you're buying who will gladly offer you names of people to contact. Also many new car dealers will inspect the car for you for the price of an hour or two of shop time. You can also call the AAA in your area. There are also professional credentialing organizations who have qualified members to assess vehicle. Check out any website devoted to appraisers. I ran into your issue a few years ago when I bought an old Corvette out of town.
