Does anyone have any memories of Phil Donahue or Erma Bombeck ? They lived across the street from each other in the early '60's, on Cushwa in Centerville. They were both very involved in the building of the new Catholic Church on Far Hills. Erma moved to Bellbrook, then Arizona. Donahue moved to Chicago. He is from west side Cleveland.

My impression as a kid of that time was that these two locals vanished from private life in the area when they became nationally famous. IE, Phil Donohue was probably accessible when he was just a Channel 7 or Channel 2 host. When he got big he disappeared from trips to the local grocery, etc. I know people in Centerville and I don't know anyone who knew him. Nor Erma Bombeck.

Dayton's not like LA or NYC, the few famous people around there don't get seen in public. Except for Dave Chappelle in Yellow Springs. (and there is an example of a current famous local.) He's seen frequently, supposedly.

^Just don't talk to him unless you know him. He dropped out of show biz life for a reason.

Erma Bombeck spoke at my commencement from UD, but by then she'd moved to Arizona ...

Thanks for the responses.

It seems strange, as he had 5 kids in school when he lived in Dayton and that usually makes one involved in the community.

The Dayton area is very transient, and that most of the people who would've had contact with them are likely elsewhere.

Don't have a personal recollection of Phil but remember when his show originated from Dayton.

That Dayton is a transient area is a new insight. So often on this sight I read about how people in Dayton typically live there all their lives, some never having been to eben cleveland or cincy. Must be the two solitudes.

There is some indication that many homes in that neighbourhood are still original owner or just turning over now.

I will check the Dayton memories sight.

I think you're right! I still think it was best stated on this site by a forumer earlier this year (can't remember who). "Dayton is Colorado Springs mixed with Youngstown".
