What's Urbana like? How's the drug / crime problem? Are the people friendly?

It does have some (small) problems with drugs, but so does every town in America these days. It's otherwise a small, quiet, conservative town with a good community feel. It has a real downtown with restaurants and long-standing shops. It's not my cup of tea, but the people I know who live there love it, and generally don't move out.

Urbana is sweet. The town is in very good condition (not run-down), and they are pushing an antiques destination thing in their downtown.

For good eats if you visit, go to the Farmers Daughter on the west side of town (you can google it). Good country cooking.

^That's the vibe I have received from Urbana too, but I am not intimately familiar with the town.

Also while you are there, if you visit, there are two must-see sites

1. Robert Rothschild Farm (known for their sauces, they are sold at a lot of high-end places like Williams Sonoma, etc. Very neat farm!)
Robert Rothschild Farm : Home Page

2. The Johnny Appleseed Museum (@ Urbana University, which is actually affiliated with the Swedenborgean Church)
Johnny Appleseed Education Center & Museum

Good luck!

I've found Urbana to be probably my favorite small town in Ohio. I don't live there, but I like to visit. Many of the historic homes are HUGE and unique with all the trimmings. A great downtown area with lots of trees on every street. A really great place.

The surrounding countryside of Champaign County is really pretty with some steep hills but lots of farms in all directions.

The Airport Cafe (at the airport - hard to guess, I know - just north of downtown) is a great place for a cheap bite to eat. Good pies, too!

Heroin and meth is everywhere

Looks like Urbana might be a decent place if you work at Honda in near W Liberty
